Dear NEPTA Members,
As friendlier weather begins to arrive we eagerly
embrace the approach of Spring and the sense of renewal that it brings to our music and our teaching.
|
Thanks to all who turned out for a fascinating morning with Sally Pinkas, our February guest speaker, who has been championing new music in her performing and recording career. She provided intriguing links between the late Romantic and mid-20th century work of Fauré to the contemporary American compositions of Harold Shapero. Linda Gatzke has provided an excellent summary along with Ms. Pinkas's outline and musical examples.

Please be sure to attend NEPTA's next event, the Student Masterclass on Monday, March 25 at 9:30 a.m., when Gila Goldstein, professor of music at Boston University, will lead students of NEPTA teachers to wonderful discoveries about piano performance. A list of the repertoire to be played will be sent to you shortly so stay tuned!
I wish you a very Happy Spring and I look forward to seeing you at NEPTA soon!

We are honored to announce a new award established in memory of former NEPTA president Peg Bachelder. It is the Margaret Bachelder Memorial Award for Best Performance of a Romantic Piece, to be selected by the judges at the Alice Hamlet High School Senior Competition. This award is the result of generous contributions from friends and family of Peg, members of the NEPTA community and in bequest from Peg to NEPTA, and in collaboration with Peg's husband and brother. Beginning this year, the award of $150 annually will be presented to the winner who will perform at the Annual Awards Recital in May. This will be a wonderful chance for NEPTA members to remember Peg every year through music.

UPDATE ON STUDENT RECITALS
Many thanks to Miriam Gargarian and Ruth Shyu for successfully chairing the exciting 20th-21st Century, Jazz & Pop, and Composition Recitals on March 3. The eclectic repertoire and stellar performances of the students created a very enjoyable afternoon. Thanks also to Elizabeth Landman for presiding over the wonderful Ensemble Recital on March 9 at Steinert's in Boston. A very high level of playing was achieved. The Senior Recitals on March 10 were beautifully coordinated by Niva Fried, Janet Ainsworth and Eleanor McLaughlin. Sincere thanks to these NEPTA Committee members for making it possible for NEPTA's talented students to perform in such a professional and artistic setting. Congratulations and thanks to all of the teachers and students who participated.
Best of luck to the performers in the Intermediate II Recitals, the Middle School Competition, the Adult Recital and the High School Competition!
