Colleen Campbell Dear NEPTA Members,

Greetings in the New Year! I hope that 2013 brings you great   happiness and prosperity!

NEPTA concluded 2012 on a high note with the Teachers' Masterclass on November 19 taught by the ever-inspiring Hung-Kuan Chen. Sublime performances were provided by NEPTA teachers Sivan Etedgee, Diana Tetzlaff and Shaylor Lindsay, who were brilliantly led to new discoveries about the repertoire by Mr. Chen in a captivating presentation. Many thanks to the performers for their wonderfully sensitive playing. In a very moving preface, Hung-Kuan Chen dedicated the class to the memory of Anthony di Bonaventura, whose exquisite legatissimo playing of Chopin passagework without pedal inspired Hung-Kuan Chen to seek out Mr. di Bonaventura as a teacher.

The Teachers' Exchange and Members' Coffee on December 3 were thoroughly informative and enjoyable. Linda Vieira has captured the morning in her superbly written notes. Sincere thanks to Helena Vesterman, Alice Wilkinson and Janet Ainsworth for sharing their tips for successfully preparing students for performances. A welcoming Teachers' Coffee with delectable refreshments was beautifully arranged by Dianne Impallaria who chaired both of the morning's events. Thank you, Dianne!
Paul Sheftel Please join us on Monday, January 28, at 9:30 at First Parish of Watertown for a very special presentation by well-known composer and pianist Paul Sheftel. From his studies in Paris with Alexander Tansman to Juilliard with Edward Steuermann and beyond, Mr. Sheftel will take us on a fascinating journey as he presents "Pages from my Journal." Be sure to arrive by 9 am for the NEPTA Music Sale, organized wonderfully by Ruth Ross.

I look forward to seeing you on January 28th!

Warm regards,
Colleen Campbell
President

IDEAS FOR 2013-2014 SPEAKERS AND MASTERCLASS TEACHERS
Is there a speaker or pedagogue whom you would like to see as a Presenter for NEPTA? A topic you would particularly like to hear about? The Program Committee, led by Shann Wood, invites you to share your suggestions for the 2013-2014 Speaker Series and Masterclasses in preparation for the Program Committee meeting on February 4. Please send your ideas to Shann (shannwood@comcast.net) by February 1. We would love to hear from you!
PROGRAM BOOK AND MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY CHAIR NEEDED
NEPTA has a wonderful volunteer position that you can carry out from the comfort of your own home in the slow summer months! Here is a chance to put your word processing skills to work for NEPTA and to follow in the footsteps of Lindsey Robb, who has held the position of Program Book and Membership Directory Chair for many years. Thankfully Lindsey will stay on as Treasurer, but as his other work has increased, he must now hand over the Program Book Chair title to a successor. Lindsey has very generously offered to mentor the new volunteer, providing the skills necessary to deliver the booklet and directory to our members.

You will not only be among the first to know next year's programs and speakers, but you will also get to choose the color for the new books! If you are interested please contact me, Colleen Campbell, at campbell.c2@gmail.com. Thank you Lindsey for your tremendous devotion and efforts!
STUDENT RECITAL AND COMPETITION APPLICATIONS
The 2013 student recitals are well underway, with the Junior I and Junior II Recitals already successfully completed. Many thanks to Nancy Burstein and her committee members for organizing and supervising the first two recitals with such skill and warmth and congratulations to all of the fine players!

I am happy to report that most NEPTA teachers are having great success with the new online application forms. They save a great deal of time for the Recital Chairs and they will make your work easier too. Please be patient while mastering the new system! Be sure to review your information carefully before you select "Add to Cart." If you have any questions please contact the Chairperson of the recital or competition, listed at the bottom of the application form. For additional help you may contact a member of our team of Computer Buddies, Nancy Burstein, impresaria@comcast.net 781-646-3698; Colleen Campbell, campbell.c2@gmail.com 781-237-1207; or Lydia Reed-Guertin, lydiaguertin@yahoo.com 781-643-7308.

Please note that NEPTA's new Intermediate I Recital Chair is Veda Kogan. For questions regarding this recital please contact Veda at vedakogan@yahoo.com.

A STUDENT'S THOUGHTS ABOUT NEPTA
NEPTA has always given me opportunities to perform for others, meet new people, and be inspired. After long hours of practicing, it is always nice to go to a NEPTA competition or recital and remember that I am not alone and that others are as passionate about music as I am.
