To our great good fortune, our October guest speaker Karl Paulnack was able to appear in Watertown on November 5 to deliver a
fascinating presentation on the history of collaborative piano, outlining the rich opportunities and requirements for pianists who pursue this demanding musical specialty. In the second half of the morning Mr. Paulnack explored the topic "Is Music in Trouble" describing classical music's power to endure in today's rapidly changing society.
Please see a synopsis of the presentation, beautifully written by Jean Alderman.

The NEPTA Mentoring Program is a unique opportunity for any member to observe, free of charge, master teachers as they teach their students. The art of teaching is difficult to pass on from one generation of teachers to the next, merely through writing or talking. NEPTA's Mentors are committed to sharing their expertise with Mentees through the NEPTA Mentoring Program. The ideas that we gain from observing a master class are sometimes priceless, but often they do not address the week-in week-out process of teaching. This is your chance to observe that process. Both Mentors and Mentees have had enriching educational experiences through the Mentoring Program. If you would like to participate in this innovative opportunity, contact the NEPTA Mentoring Program Chair: Betty Reed, 617-789-6862, pianoears@gmail.com.

A STUDENT'S THOUGHTS ABOUT NEPTA
Since I first started taking lessons with my teacher, Valerie Henkin, I've had the opportunity to become a member of the NEPTA community. Numerous recitals and competitions later, I can say that NEPTA has had a profound effect on my life. NEPTA has been able to provide me with numerous invaluable experiences. Playing at recitals, I've been able to not only practice playing in front of others, but also meet many other pianists. I've even had the luck to play in a recital at Carnegie Hall alongside other members from NEPTA! Recitals have also expanded my knowledge of the piano repertoire. I distincly remember playing in the 20th/21st Century Recital, which had a program full of new and interesting pieces. As well, competitions have been just as fruitful. Playing in front of judges provides me with a learning experience that I can apply to later competitions. Furthermore, the feedback I receive is very useful to me, as it tell me which parts need improvement. So far, NEPTA has played a great role in helping me along in developing my piano experience. As for the future, I look forward to another year of recitals and competitions, perhaps even be fortunate enough to play in a master class. NEPTA has done wonders to my experiences in piano, and I can't wait to see what the future will bring!
Michael Heyang, student of Valerie Henkin
