Greetings!

I've always been faascinated by what has appeared to me to be a recent "buzzword" with companies, namely 'branding' (see Dave Bishton's article, below). To those of us who grew up with cowboy movies and TV shows (does anyone else remember the short-lived Chuck Connors show Branded?), branding is "the application of a symbol burned into a critter's skin with a hot iron." It's interesting to me that this concept has been adopted by modern businesses, including CSI. As Dave explains, branding is important to marketing and symbolism ... and it also reminds me of those long-ago lost hours in front of the TV set.

Happy New Year!

"It is a pretty recognizable brand name. Originally it was "Jerry's Guide to the World Wide Web" but we settled on "Yahoo." ~ Jerry Yang

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

So CSI has a new look these days. Have you seen it on the Institute www.csinet.org website lately, or the Southwest Region http://southwest.csinet.org website? (See the new CSI-Southwest logo on the top right of this page - ed.) The new logo will soon find its way into every nook and cranny of CSI. With this logo comes what the industry refers to as a tagline "Building Knowledge. Improving Project Delivery." So what's with this new look? Will it change anything about how the industry looks at us, or the way you participate in it?

The image of an organization is one key to its potential success, and the Construction Specifications Institute (or CSI) has enjoyed a good reputation and recognition in the construction industry, even if people don't exactly know what it means. Our Institute commissioned a study in 2012 by the Potomac Communications Group that uncovered many interesting perceptions of CSI, both from within and outside its membership. Do you have to be a specifier to join? (and why, by the way, do most spell check programs not recognize the word "specifier"?) What are specifications anyway, and is this all CSI does?

Regional 2013 Outlook Shows Private-Sector Strength

Both the Intermountain and Colorado construction markets are forecast to meet or exceed national industry expectations in 2013, according to several economic sources.
Earlier this year, McGraw-Hill Construction forecast a 6% increase in construction starts nationwide in 2013, following a 5% rise this year. FMI Corp. predicts new construction put-in-place will climb 8% next year, following this year's 5% increase. The National Association of Home Builders says the rebound in the national housing market is on solid ground, but adds that the big numbers are still...
