 Greetings!

In his article this month (see below), President Dave Bishton discusses the multiple roles our chapters and members play within our organization. In this information age (read "sensory overload") it's a difficult yet important task to reach out to meet the needs of everyone in our community. Meetings are one avenue, but for members (like me) who are located far from chapter cities, electronic media are usually the only ways to stay in touch. I, for one, am glad to see that communication is a key agenda item at CSI-Southwest.

Have a nice Thanksgiving!

BUILDING THE BRAND
David A. Bishton, RA, CSI, CCS, CCCA,
Southwest Region President

Fiscal year 2013 is well underway and all of our Region chapters are working hard in providing quality programs and events for the construction community. That is what we do in CSI - teach, network, promote good practices, communicate/cooperate with the building team, and stay on the cutting edge of technology. We work for the excellence of construction on behalf of owners, designers, project managers, contractors, and ultimately the users. It's a rewarding effort when you see people making connections and realizing how well the process can work when we're right on the mark.

Our Albuquerque Chapter sponsored its annual Continuing Education Conference in September 2012, reaching out to architects, project managers, building material manufacturers, and community leaders in Albuquerque with a high quality day-long program. These kinds of events are a major effort, and do much to promote CSI's leadership in the industry. Chapter monthly meetings featuring recent programs by Denver on blast-resistant construction, Las Vegas on lighting design concepts, and Pikes Peak on wildfire lessons learned for construction are also very valuable to showcase CSI's varied interests and knowledge base. Special events like Salt Lake City's "Let's Get Dirty" in October and Phoenix's Bowling Event during CONSTRUCT 2012 are other creative ways to advance the mission of CSI. It's also great to hear that chapters like El Paso and Las Vegas are cooperating with their counterparts in AIA, and Phoenix is sponsoring a LEED Platinum tour of a local contractor's headquarters.

NON-TRADITIONAL COMMITTEE CHAIRS NEEDED - WHY?

YES
- To introduce chapter leaders in like positions to fellow Region cannon fodder, no...co-conspirators, no... volunteer leaders (better).
 - To encourage chapter leaders to share (specifically) what works and what doesn't work with other like-minded leaders.
 -  To keep an eye open for resources that would benefit...

VALUING MEMBERS ... A KEY TO RETENTION
by Bryan Varner, CSI, CCCA

Good chapter leaders and members regularly ask themselves where the value lies in membership. We know that our commitment  to CSI stems from the benefits we gain through participation. Without tangible or perceived value, members' participation will wane, and eventually so will their interest in renewing their membership.
