The Flow Mach 3b has allowed Trident to take on new work that they hadn't been able to bring in before their waterjet purchase. |
Trident Precision Manufacturing, located in Webster, NY, provides a variety of services to help companies' concepts come to life. The company is a "one-stop shop" that offers customers complete solutions in all areas related to custom OEM products/value added assemblies and services. From design and development to manufacturing, inventory and project management, Trident has the facilities, workforce, capabilities and experience to serve a wide spectrum of industries.
In early 2011, Trident further diversified their manufacturing capabilities by investing in Flow International Corporation's state-of-the-art waterjet technology. Many factors contributed to Trident's decision to purchase the Flow Mach 3b model over competitive waterjets. For one, Flow manufactures all the systems that go into their waterjets under one roof. This includes the advanced Dynamic Waterjet head, which was the ultimate reason Trident chose Flow.
"The technology in the Dynamic head was a major factor that stood out for us. It allows us to cut a wide variety of materials, including copper, aluminum, stainless steel, cold rolled steel, plastic and marble, faster and more accurate than other methods," says John Wing, Manufacturing Supervisor at Trident. "The more we use the Flow, the more we understand what it is capable of. Our waterjet has opened up new job opportunities and new customers as a result. The Flow has especially been effective when cutting copper versus punching or laser cutting because it's hard to punch copper and you can't really laser cut thicker copper either. Laser cutting materials also leaves a heat affected zone around the edge that needs to be removed. When cutting with the waterjet, this issue doesn't exist."
John Wing also credits their Flow waterjet as an aid to more efficient machining processes by first cutting the blank on the Mach 3b before utilizing CNC vertical machining centers.
"We're saving time and money by rough cutting blanks to near net shape, then utilizing the CNC mills to machine the contour and the interior surfaces. We're able to cut material faster on the Flow than the CNC mills, and as a result, cycle times are much faster on the CNC mills to finish the job."
John Wing says the exceptional service provided by Flow and OptiPro before, during, and after the sale has left Trident completely satisfied with the purchase of their Mach 3b.
"We have done business with OptiPro in the past, so we're already aware of how passionate they are about service. It is very encouraging that Flow takes service seriously as well. Flow has been quick to respond to any questions or issues we have had throughout the two and a half years since our Mach 3b was installed. If we ever exceed capacity on this waterjet, the combination of Flow's advanced technology and exceptional service from OptiPro and Flow would make buying another one a no-brainer."
