Zoo's Reaction to Death of Elephant Calf Shows Exactly How These Facilities Think About Animals

"Given the lack of stimulation and exercise and the inbreeding inherent at zoos, the infant-mortality rate for elephants is almost triple the rate in the wild," said Claire Fryer, campaign coordinator for PETA Australia. "Melbourne Zoo continues to breed these intelligent animals in an effort to churn out more cash cows. Zoos around the world have closed their elephant exhibits or announced plans to phase them out, citing their own inability to meet the significant needs of these animals. It's time for Melbourne Zoo to do the same."   Full Article Here

Animal Testing Resumes For Avon, Mary Kay, And Estee Lauder

Kathy Guillermo, the Vice President of PETA's Laboratory Investigations was saddened by the move: "Avon, Este Lauder, and Mary Kay have regressed a generation: Their products are once again being dripped into rabbits' eyes and smeared onto animals' abraded skin." She's urging customers to choose cruelty-free products instead.

GMO News:
Are GMOs Vegan?

Excerpts: "Most of the GMOs produced come from the same people who brought you Agent Orange and DDT: Monsanto....
Of the little safety testing that has been done on existing GMOs, either by biotech corporations or independently,
most has been done on non-human animals... Remember, these biotech companies aren't just in the food business.
They develop medicines, vaccines, industrial agents, chemical agents, etc...
Monsanto carried out it's own studies, without independent peer-approval, and submitted them as evidence of the
safety of their product..."  Full Article Here: https://peaceiscomingforyou.wordpress.com/2010/09/04/are-gmos-vegan/

Donation

Please consider making a donation to Northern Vegans
Northern Vegans is always in need of donations to continue our great work in the community.  As most of you know, not only are we a not for profit group with no paid employees, but we also often fund our group with our personal funds as board members.  Northern Vegans has existed since 2006 and a short list of our accomplishments in the community include: library donations of vegan related books and media numbering in the hundreds; dozens of movie/documentary showings; over a hundred restaurant meet ups and other socials; numerous vegan presentations; countless tabling events; immense amount of vegan literature dispersed; and the list really goes on and on.

Help us continue spreading the message and consider donating to us today.  No amount is too small and we use every bit of it to our fullest extent.  In fact it is not outlandish to say that for every $1.00 that is donated we put at least 50 cents more into that $1.00 simply because we work on a 100% volunteer basis, no salaries, and several of us continuously put our own personal money into the necessary expenses for the group.

Please send donations to:

THANK YOU!

Does it make sense to save one animal to then eat another?

Why Dog and Cat Rescue Shelters Are Taking Meat off the Menu at Fundraisers

Excerpt:
The question of whether or not it is ever okay for animal welfare organizations to serve meat at fundraisers was recently brought to the fore in this article.
The truth is, more and more animal agencies like municipal shelters, humane societies, SPCAs, and rescue organizations are adopting animal-friendly menu policies for official functions. These organizations frequently take in farmed animals like rabbits, chickens, goats, and sheep, and have found it inappropriate to serve similar animals at events.
That sizable and growing list includes organizations around the U.S. like St. Martin's Animal Rescue in Sheridan, OR; Second Chance Animal Center in Shaftsbury, VT; Hearts United for Animals in Auburn, NE; Wyandot County Humane Society in Upper Sandusky, OH; East Bay SPCA in Oakland, CA; SPCA LA in Los Angeles, CA; Tony La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation in Walnut Creek, CA, Animal Rescue Inc. in New Freedom, PA; Palm Springs Animal Shelter in Palm Springs, CA; Brother Wolf Animal Rescue in Asheville, NC; andWashington Humane Society in Washington, DC.

In a 2013 survey of people who work or volunteer for California shelters and rescues, 85 percent of respondents believed it is ethically inconsistent for an organization that rescues animals to sell or serve animal products at sponsored/fundraising events. However, at that time, only 29 percent had already adopted a formal policy.

"We're the ones on the frontlines, rescuing animals in our communities, and it just doesn't make sense to rescue a dog or a cat and then turn around and serve meat at a community-based function," said Todd Stosuy, Field Services Manager for Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter, one of the largest animal control agencies in the country with a policy of leaving meat off the menu. "Why do we go out there and rescue these animals, when we're serving other ones for people to eat?"
