Consider buying local products and supporting local and independent businesses and services. Perhaps a gift certificate for a massage in the local area, a gift certificate to a local independent restaurant, tai chi/yoga classes, a book at a local book store, etc.

Native Sister Soap (handmade by NV member Colleen Carlyle) offers vegan and all natural soaps as well as vegan soy candles. Contact Colleen by phone at: 906-346-6035. Note: Not all of the products are vegan, but many are. Just let her know you would like all vegan ingredients when you order.

Also, for other sorts of tangible items consider buying used goods at resale shops, thrift stores, and antique stores.  There are many great cds, dvds, books, clothes, jewelry, toys, greeting cards of all kinds, smaller items like glassware/pottery, larger items like furniture, etc. in very good condition at these stores. You would also be supporting local and independent businesses and non-profit organizations.

Whenever we buy used goods we are salvaging items that would have otherwise been destined for the landfill- and we are also lowering our carbon footprint by buying less new resources. Remember the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Recycling is the last on the list, yet is the most popular. Reducing and reusing has a much greater impact on the the environment than recycling. Recycling is still important though!

You can find other used items from dealers that sell on: www.ebay.com, www.abebooks.com, or www.amazon.com.

Or consider buying items that are biodegradable and vegan like food, natural soaps, organic fruit baskets, vegan baked goods (perhaps baking vegan cookies or some other delicious treats and sending them out as a gift).  Or you can send a package or give a box full of many vegan and organic products anything from food to body care- purchasing them at your local natural food store.

Local Natural Food Stores that offer many vegan and organic options:

Marquette Food Co-op: http://marquettefood.coop

City Green Market (an all vegan natural food store): www.facebook.com/CityGreenMarket

There are so many ways we can buy thoughtful, cruelty-free, and sustainable gifts this holiday season.  We hope these suggestions will help you with your holiday shopping.

Think Global, Act Local!
Happy Holidays to you All!
