Where do I get my iron if not from red meat?

Answer from Neal Barnard, M.D.

"...there are actually two forms of iron. Plants have nonheme iron, which is more absorbable when the body is low in iron and less absorbable when the body already has enough iron. This allows the body to regulate its iron balance. On the other hand, meats have heme iron, which barges right into your bloodstream whether you need it or not. The problem is that many people have too much iron stored in their bodies. Excess iron can spark the production of free radicals that accelerate aging, increase the risk of heart disease, and cause other problems."

Highlight of the Month

Allison Rivers Sampson

Founder of Allison's Gourmet

Allison Sampson

Fudge

Vegan, organic, and fair trade FudgeDoes it get any better?

Ingredients: organic sugar, organic fair trade cocoa, organic coconut milk, organic coconut butter, organic vanilla, sea salt.

What happens when a woman with a life-long passion for sweets develops a reverence for our planet and all of its inhabitants? Why, she opens the very first vegan bakery and confectionery boutique, of course! In 1989, Allison Rivers Samson learned about the myriad benefits of veganism, including optimized health, compassion for animals, and care of the planet. Naturally, her love of sweets drove her to begin experimenting with vegan dessert recipes.

As any baker or food scientist will tell you, replacing the butter, eggs, and corn syrup in traditional baked goods and confections is no easy task. Each of these ingredients plays an important role in creating the texture, crumb, moisture, and flavor of the traditional product. Not one to balk at a challenge, Allison knew that she could find a way to make all the sweet things she loved without using animal products, highly refined sweeteners, and unpronounceable ingredients.

In 1997, after refining her skills through chef training and countless experiments, and perfecting her recipes to surpass any other desserts on the market, Allison was ready to please the palates of discerning dessert lovers everywhere with her moist, chewy vegan cookies. She opened our predecessor, AllisonsCookies.com. Through the ensuing years, she continued to add more top-notch exclusive creations like vegan brownies, vegan caramels, vegan toffee, artisan vegan chocolates and more. Naturally, Allison's Cookies grew into Allison's Gourmet, the premiere and most prestigious vegan sweets and gift company on the web.
