This tour will explore the confluence of the Saw Mill River and the Hudson Rivers. What once served the agricultural needs of the Native Americans and early Dutch and English settlers, and later as the source of power for an industrial based economy, is now leading the way for the City of Yonkers revitalization efforts. The tour will focus on the new Van Der Donck Park and will include a "behind the scenes" description of its design and construction over the past four years and efforts to daylight the next phases of the Saw Mill River. The tour will last 2.5 hours and be led by Mario Caruso, a city planner who worked on the daylighting project. Meeting location will be provided upon purchase of ticket. Tickets $20 per person. Rain date is Sunday, 4/20. More info and order tickets HERE.

Congratulations to the City of Yonkers and the City Engineering Department on being awarded "Project of the Year" by the New York State Society of Professional Engineers. This award comes as recognition for the Daylighting of the Saw Mill River, which was buried beneath the city in the 1920's. The Daylighting, which opened last fall, is a new urban river and park through the center of downtown Yonkers (formerly the site of the Larkin Plaza parking lot in front of the DMV). "As a result of innovative thinking and planning of our engineers, the daylighted Saw Mill River, now known as Van Der Donck Park, is a natural, open-air environment that provides ecological as well as community benefits and advances the City's plan for social and economic progress," says Mayor Spano. "I look forward to this urban gem becoming the centerpiece to our downtown area's revitalization. Congratulations to all those involved in making this project Yonkers' biggest success in recent years."
If you haven't been to downtown Yonkers lately, check out this wonderful addition to the renaissance of our waterfront and downtown.
