The Doors of Perception
By Jennifer Dudas

The author Aldous Huxley once said, "There are things known and there are things unknown, and in between are the doors of perception." Over the past few years, some anglers and crew 'perceived' a shift in the Bahamas Billfish Championship's target species away from blue marlin. The term 'perceived' is used here Jennifer Dudas because in reality, year after year, BBC anglers consistently catch more blue marlin than white marlin or sailfish.

As Jan Fogt points out in her article, Winning Ways for the 40th BBC, the change has not been in the target species but rather an adjustment in strategy and tactics. Jan wrote, "Dragging that Black Bart Grander Candy or Moldcraft Wide Ranger through the bottomless fathoms of no man's land on the hunt for a promising looking ledge has not been the best strategy for 'winning it all' in the Bahamas Billfish Championship the last few years. With the current scoring system, the BBC is more about numbers and less about big fish ... we'd say the Championship has become a lot more tactical."

Unlike the 1980's, one monster blue does not win the tournament. For example, despite setting a new Bahamas record with a 1,119 pound blue marlin, team Double Dog needed two white marlin and another blue to win the 2011 Treasure Cay Championship.

Green Turtle Dredging on Track
GT Dredging
Work continues on the dredging of the channel into White Sound at Green Turtle Cay and the addition of new, larger slips at Green Turtle Club.

Green Turtle Cay is a favorite spot for anyone that has visited the Abacos. But, at low tide, water depth in the entrance channel has been a major obstacle for tournament fishing boats. As announced in the BBC's September e-Update, that is no longer the case. Dredging of the channel into White Sound started in August. When completed the controlling depth of the channel will be ten feet at mean low water.

The deeper channel into White Sound combined with the enthusiastic support of the Green Turtle Club, the Bluff House and the community, the Bahamas Billfish Championship is now able to have the second leg of the 2014 Series on the island of Green Turtle Cay Championship. The dates for Green Turtle Cay Championship are May 21 - 24, 2014

The BBC fleet will utilize the marinas at Green Turtle Club and Bluff House. Both marinas have new power pedestals and all utilities were upgraded after hurricane Sandy. Along with the dredging, Green Turtle Club is adding additional big boat slips. Add to that shore side accommodation improvements by each resort and community support and the BBC has a new tournament venue!

Taggers of Important 2012 Recaptures Rewarded

Each year certain tag recoveries are especially meaningful to this study because of the new information revealed. You cannot predict Dolphin Study which fish or even whose fish will be recovered in some distant place. These major movements have involved fish tagged by boats that tag large numbers of fish each year as well as by boats that have tagged their first few fish. While the odds of a major recovery may be in favor of boat crews that tag large numbers of fish, each year there are a large number of boat crews that tag their first dolphins. This shows that every fish tagged has the potential to provide important new information. You just do not know if or where that tagged fish may show up once you release it.

People reporting these special recoveries are rewarded with a program T-shirt but more importantly with the information about the story behind the fish they caught. Curiosity about where the fish came from is the leading motivation for anglers to report recoveries of tagged fish. For those fishermen tagging the fish, they get the satisfaction of a personal contribution to science and the knowledge of where their fish go when released.
