BBC Heading to Green Turtle
GT Dredging

"Let's have a BBC tournament in Green Turtle Cay." That's what the lovers of the Island have said for many years. The same has been echoed by the residents of Green Turtle Cay as well. The Island is a favorite spot for anyone that has visited the Abacos. But, at low tide, water depth in the entrance channel has been a major obstacle for tournament fishing boats.

That is no longer the case. The long-awaited dredging of the channel into White Sound at Green Turtle Cay started in August. When completed the controlling depth of the channel will be ten feet at mean low water. This substantial project is jointly underwritten by the Green Turtle Club and the Bluff House Resort & Marina.

BBC president, Al Behrendt said, "With the deeper channel into White Sound and the enthusiastic support of the Green Turtle Club, the Bluff House and the community, the Bahamas Billfish Championship is now able to announce that the second leg of the 2014 Series will be the Green Turtle Cay Championship. The dates for leg two are May 21 - 24, 2014

Behrendt went on to say, "It's no longer a matter of playing the tides to get in and out of White Sound. This is welcome news to the many BBC participants that have spent time at Green Turtle between tournaments or on lay days."

The BBC fleet will utilize the marinas at Green Turtle Club and Bluff House. Behrendt continued. "Both marinas have new power pedestals and all utilities were upgraded after hurricane Sandy." Along with the dredging, Green Turtle Club is adding additional big boat slips. Add to that shore side accommodation improvements by each resort and community support and the BBC has a new tournament venue!

The Wave Paver team pulled away from the pack and lengthened their lead with four blue marlin releases today - tallying a whopping nine total in four days of fishing - to win the 41st USVI Open Atlantic Blue Marlin Tournament (ABMT) or 'Boy Scout Tournament' so nicknamed for the event's chief beneficiary. What's more, Jr. Davis, owner/angler of the Port Canaveral, Florida-based 61-foot Garlington, released six of the blue marlin to earn Top Angler and pocket $10,000 in cash.

"The first two day days were good and we finished the second day in the lead with five releases," recaps Wave Paver's Davis. "Then, we had a bad day the third day. Didn't catch a thing. We headed out on the lay day to fish and found a place on the (North) Drop that was productive for us. We headed back there today and it all came together for us."

Eight boats were tied for first place with five blue marlin releases apiece going into today's last day of tournament fishing. Jichi, a 68-foot Paul Mann homeported in Florida and helmed by Capt. Gene Lenow, jumped into the lead early by being the first boat to release six blue marlin with an early morning catch.
