Embracing the Legacy Sets Record
We greatly appreciate everyone who came out on June 3rd in support of Embracing the Legacy. It was a beautiful night at the JFK Presidential Library and Museum, and a wonderful time was had by all as we celebrated the legacy of Robert F. Kennedy and the passion and dedication of our 2014 honorees: William F. Achtmeyer, Deborah A. Frank, M.D., Laurie Garduque, and Jonathan Kozol.  With nearly 400 attendees, the event was incredibly successful, as we surpassed our goal and raised over $253,000 in funds vital to agency programs and initiatives.

Special thanks to all of our sponsors, including Presenting Sponsor, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. and Champion Sponsor, The Parthenon Group, as well as co-chairs, John Boyle, III, James Geraghty, and Congressman Joe Kennedy III, and master of ceremonies, Susan Wornick, who helped make it a memorable evening for everyone.

National Resource Center Update

Robert F. Kennedy National Resource Center for Juvenile Justice continues to expand its national reach in juvenile justice and system reform.  Through the support of a grant awarded to the Massachusetts Department of Youth Services, RFK National Resource Center is providing technical assistance in Essex and Suffolk Counties to expand Dual Status Youth Reform within Massachusetts. We are also actively engaged in discussions with additional sites seeking to improve outcomes for the youth and families they serve-including Illinois, Idaho, Florida, and Guam.

In April, the RFK National Resource Center convened its first in-person meetings of the Dual Status Youth (DSY) and Probation System Review (PSR) Practice Networks. The Practice Networks bring together the expertise and innovation of experienced leaders who have cultivated reform within their local jurisdictions. Network members will work together to develop tools, resources, and new innovations to support communities striving to improve outcomes for youth and families.

Please be sure to join the RFK National Resource Center's mailing list to receive our monthly e-newsletter with up-to-date news, research, and other useful resources from the field.

Agency Awarded Funding

We are excited to announce that RFK Children's Action Corps has recently been awarded a $250,000 grant from the Frances Pew Hayes Family Foundation, whose focus is providing funding for education, healthcare, and services for children. The grant will be used to make capital improvements to our Lancaster Campus, our largest Massachusetts program.

Each year, the residence at Lancaster provides a home to over 200 children, ages 11 to 18, many of whom have suffered from parental abuse and neglect, family violence, and mental health/behavioral and cognitive challenges.  Boys and girls live, learn and heal at the Lancaster Residential Treatment Center.  Most stay for six months to one year, with a small percentage coming to us for emergency shelter before moving back to their communities.  A state-approved, special education school, the Lancaster School is open to our residents, as well as students in surrounding communities, for day and after-school programs. We are grateful for this critical support and the Foundation's belief and commitment to our staff and the children and families we serve.

We are also pleased to note that we have once again received funding from the Gardiner Howland Shaw Foundation with a grant for $15,000 to support DDAP (Detention Diversion Advocacy Project) in Dorchester. We are grateful for their continued commitment to this program.

A voluntary alternative to court-ordered detention, DDAP strives to reduce the disproportionate number of minority youth arraigned through the court system.

Thank You

We are extremely grateful for our new partnership with Dignity U Wear, a nonprofit that provides brand new clothing to those in need. Thanks to their generosity, we have created the Upper Room Boutique at our Lancaster Campus, where the boys and girls in all of our programs will have access to basic necessities (underwear, socks, shirts, pants, shoes, etc.) on an ongoing basis for absolutely free.

Our heartfelt thanks goes out to the Bolton 5K Rally for choosing RFK Children's Action Corps as the beneficiary of this year's road race held on June 14th.  The event surpassed its goal, raising over $40,000!  The money will be used at our Lancaster Campus to build The Fly Zone, a series of zip lines, ropes courses, and bridges that will help teach our kids how to work together and trust one another.  Once again, a big thank you to the Rally committee, sponsors, participants, and the entire community who came out to support our kids!
