Thomas Abt Speaks at Annual Meeting
Recently, RFK Children's Action Corps hosted its Annual Meeting. The event brought together the Agency's Board of Directors, leaders from Massachusetts' child welfare and juvenile justice agencies as well as political leaders from the Commonwealth.
Discussion and presentations focused on the work being done in the field, highlighted the Agency's successes from the previous year and provided a glimpse into opportunities and work in the coming year.
We were thrilled to have Thomas Abt as keynote speaker for the evening to share his insight into juvenile justice from the national level. Abt serves as Chief of Staff to the Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) at the U.S. Department of Justice, where he works on a broad spectrum of criminal and juvenile justice issues. Youth Compete in "Get-A-Job Olympics"
Every six months our Youth in Progress Leadership Program hosts "Get-A-Job Olympics" and it proves to be a fun way for the teens to learn valuable life skills. Volunteers from the local community join in the exercise, not only giving their professional feedback but also giving support to the youth by showing their community embraces their involvement and effort in getting after-school jobs. With their help, the teens participate in a series of job-readiness stations to get hands-on experience in applying and interviewing for a job.
Read more about the different obstacles the teens face in "Get-A-Job Olympics" here.

A Year of Celebrations to Commemorate 30 Years
"It was cool to see my own heart rate with the EMT; he was interesting." - Annina, Age 15
"I liked the photographer because I learned about taking pictures. I want to become a photographer." - Da'nequa, Age 16
It was a busy and memorable year for the young women and staff at the RFK Children's Action Corps' Fay A. Rotenberg School. Last year marked the 30th Anniversary for the program, which has served over 1,000 young women throughout the 30 years. To celebrate "30 Years of Service to Young Women," throughout 2012 the program hosted a Speaker Series, inviting local professionals to the school to share their life experiences. The girls were encouraged to help select speakers by talking to the staff about their aspirations and different professions that interested them. In addition to the Speaker Series, the program hosted a luncheon in June to celebrate the work and impact of the program. Click here for the full story recapping the year and for links to other stories posted throughout the year. The Speaker Series is planned to continue in 2013. Our Supporters in Action
A Spotlight on: Lifetime gift has the power to transform lives
In fiscal year 2012, RFK Children's Action Corps received a substantial bequest to benefit the COASA program (Children of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse). The donor, Ray Stiver, had strong ties with the program and its director, Maureen McGlame. "Ray was in recovery himself, and he made his life about recovery," said McGlame. "He and his wife didn't have any children, but they were always compassionate about the impact of alcoholism on family members."
McGlame says Stiver was a resource for families in the COASA program, which supports children of alcoholism and substance abuse by providing them with education, support and advocacy. "We have a very basic message: To teach kids that they didn't cause it, they can't control it and they can't cure it," said McGlame. Now with the Stiver bequest, McGlame's vision to bring this message to more children and families across greater Boston and beyond can become a reality.

Winter Wishes make the Holidays Sweeter for our Students
The boys and girls in our care felt the kindness and caring of companies, individuals, and families this holiday season as they opened the gifts so thoughtfully chosen to make their holiday bright.
In addition to the many Agency friends who contributed we especially thank our partners at: Broadway in Boston, Corinthian Events, SmartBear, State Street Corp., Symmes, Maini & McKee Associates, The Chiofaro Company, The Parthenon Group, TJX Companies, United Martial Arts Center for Health & Well Being, Walker Parking Consultants and Yoga with Amelia.
