Summer Reading is Here!
Sign Up for Summer Reading!
If you're going into 6th - 12th grades next fall, sign up for the Teen Summer Reading Program online or at the Information Desk, where you can pick up the reading log with all the rules. Turn in your reading logs all summer until Friday, August 21 for prizes and tickets that give you a chance to win one of the Grand Prizes!

Celebrate Your Fandoms at the Teen FanFest!
Saturday, June 13, 6 - 9 p.m.

No matter what your fandom, come celebrate with other fans at our Teen FanFest lock-in. Are you a Harry Potter fan? Or maybe The Fault in Our Stars? An anime fan? Avengers? Doctor Who? Sherlock? Supernatural? Homestuck? Superman? Batman? Divergent? The Hunger Games? We're going to celebrate all your fictional fan favorites with games, crafts, food, a photo booth, and a cosplay contest!

What's cosplay? Literally, it's "costume play." Dress up as a character from any fictional world, whether it's a book, anime, movie, or TV show.

Get signed up now, because space is limited. And start working on your costume (not required, but definitely encouraged)! Need some help with that? We'll have a simple cosplay workshop on Tuesday, June 9, 3:30 - 5 p.m., to help you get ready.

Cosplay Workshop: Simple Costumes and Props
Tuesday, June 9, 3:30 - 5 p.m.
Create a mask for your superhero or a cardboard crown for your queen. We'll make simple costumes and props with paint and everyday materials.

Cooking Capers: Superhero Supper!
Tuesday, June 23,
4 - 5:30 p.m.

Learn to prepare a Superhero Supper with Hy-Vee's chef Brian Scheil. Pre-registration required.

 

Mobile Museum            
Saturday, June 13,
7:30 a.m. - noon
Board the bus from the University of Iowa to see their mobile museum exhibits. It will be in the parking lot across from the library and features display Water UndergroundHawkeyes in Space, and Over Here From Over There: Iowans in World War IIFind out more about the exhibits.
History of Comic Book Superheroes
Tuesday, June 30, 7 - 8 p.m.
Terry Fisk, who's been drawing comic strips since he was 13, will talk about the artists and writers who created superheroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Captain America, and where they got their inspiration. He'll also talk about the history of comic books and take questions.

Exciting news! Rainbow Rowell, author of Eleanor & Park and Fangirl, will be speaking this June in Cedar Rapids as part of this year's Out Loud! Author Series! Eleanor & Park just won the Iowa High School Book Award, voted on by teens all over Iowa; it's also the  Teens' Top Ten #1 for 2014. If you haven't read it yet, reserve a copy now.


Even better, buy a book at the event, and have it signed by Rainbow!

Mark Your Calendars!
After-Hours Minecraft Party
Friday, July 17, 6 - 9 p.m.
Create and destroy with your fellow Minecrafters at this after-hours lock-in. We'll play the PC game on the library's server, with space to build and mini-games like Spleef and Survival Games. We'll also have food and Minecraft-themed crafts for when you need a break.

Do you have your own Minecraft account and/or laptop? Let us know when you register! The more accounts we have, the more Minecraft fun for everyone.

P.S. We know everyone loves Minecraft, but this event is just for Minecrafters entering grades 6-12 next school year.
