Planning on doing some Christmas shopping this year? Include us in your plans! Mention Marion Public Library as you check out at Barnes & Noble on November 29, and we get a percentage of the sale! And it doesn't cost you anything.

Bring your kids to a special story time for all ages with Ms. Olivia at 11:00 a.m. and visit your favorite librarians at our table morning or afternoon on the 29th.

Need some ideas for gift-giving (or just for yourself)? Ask us for book recommendations! Also, we'll be gift-wrapping for free after 4 p.m. (Donations are appreciated!)

The library is still looking for volunteers to help make our Bookfair a success. If you are a library supporter (and who isn't?) and could spare some time on the 29th to help us out, please email Olivia at ostoner@cityofmarion.org

Or if you're shopping online during the week of November 29 - December 4, visit bn.com  and enter Bookfair ID 11455698 to make a donation that costs you nothing at all.

At the checkout screen, go to the Payment section and select Change.

Book a Trip Across America!
All Ages Reading Program

Book a Trip with us at the library! This year-round reading program couldn't be easier: we'll have logs with maps available for everyone, and all you have to do is read books. Check off each state as you read a book that either takes place in that state, is about that state, or is by an author who is from that state. Read fiction or non-fiction. We've provided lists of suggested titles for kids, teens, and adults, but you can pick your own titles, too!

When you check off a state on your reading log, you can come in and get a colored dot from one of our staff, then go put it on the state you've just finished! We can all have fun watching as Marion Library readers read their way across the USA!

Weigh in on Marion's Future!

Marion is working to create a unified vision for the community; a vision that will bring new business and investment to the area, grow tourism and visitor spending, increase business revenues, and drive Marion's future.

The next step as we work to identify what sets Marion apart from other communities is to gather community feedback. Please take a moment to complete the nine question online survey at bit.ly/brand-marion and invite your friends and neighbors - both in and out of the Marion area - to do the same.

Deadline for completing the branding survey is November 21. Thanks for caring about your community!

Learn all about our library building project!

All documents are posted at our website, including updates from Library Director Doug Raber, our Cost Benefit Analysis, our Needs Assessment, and our RFQ (Request for Qualifications).

International Games Day

Saturday, November 15th

Drop in between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m.

Marion Public Library and libraries across the country and around the world will join the American Library Association (ALA) in celebrating the popularity and educational value of games for International Games Day @ your library on November 15th, 2014.

Gaming is yet another example of how libraries are becoming more than just educational resources for the communities that they serve. They are also places where users of all ages are welcome to have fun together. And if that fun exercises their brains, enables them to meet new people in a safe and enjoyable environment, and celebrates our community's connection to each other and to libraries on every continent on Earth... well, that's just the nature of games!
Learning Safari:
The Color of Us

Wednesday, November 12th

at 10:45 a.m.

Learning Safari is a special story time and art class for preschoolers in partnership with the African American Museum

This month we will discuss multiculturalism and diversity in a manner that is easy for preschoolers to relate to: food! Our story for the day will compare children's skin colors to caramel, peaches, and espresso to prepare us for making a yummy self-portrait of our own.

Lego Club
Thursday, November 13th
from 3:00-5:00 p.m.

Get creative with everyone's favorite building blocks! Build with our stash of Legos once per month on the second Thursday.

Doodlebugs: Space Erasers

Tuesday, November 25th

at 10:45 a.m.

Doodlebugs is a hands-on art appreciation class for preschoolers and their caregivers made possible by th
Cedar Rapids Art Museum. We share stories, learn about how art is made and about the lives of famous artists, then we make our own masterpieces!

This month we're looking at how an artist fills the space on a canvas. We will create art by subtracting and erasing to show how empty space--or negative space--can also fill a canvas.

Caring Canines!
Sunday, Novermber 23rd
between 2:30-4:00 p.m.

Bring your kids to read to a certified therapy dog. They are great listeners and help build your child's confidence!
