Barnes and Noble Bookfair
Saturday, November 29

Planning on doing some Christmas shopping this year? Include us in your plans! Mention Marion Public Library as you check out at Barnes & Noble on November 29, and we get a percentage of the sale!

Visit your favorite librarians at our table morning or afternoon on the 29th. Need some ideas for gift-giving (or just yourself)? Ask us for book recommendations! Also, we'll be gift-wrapping for free after 4 p.m. (Donations are appreciated!)

Or if you're shopping online during the week of November 29 - December 4, visit bn.com and enter Bookfair ID 11455698 to make a donation that costs you nothing at all.

At the checkout screen, go to the Payment section and select Change.

Scroll all the way to the bottom of that page and check the box that says "this is a Bookfair Order."

Insert our Bookfair ID 11455698.

You get brand-new books, and we get donations from B&N that let us buy awesome reading program prizes like Nook tablets. Everybody wins!

THANK YOU for supporting your library!
Anime Clubanime
Monday, November 3, 4 - 5:30 p.m.

Join us every month in Meeting Room A to hang out with other people who love anime as we watch shows and eat Japanese snacks. If you have your own anime-style or manga artwork, bring it to show off!

Anime Club meets the first Monday of each month. Mark your calendars for the next meeting on December 1!

International Games Day!
Wednesday, November 12, 1:30 - 4:30 p.m.

Actually, International Games Day is on Saturday, November 15, but we're going to celebrate by gaming the afternoon of the 12th! Stop by after school to play video games and board games in Meeting Room A. We've got Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Dance Central, Guitar Hero, Twister, Apples to Apples, and lots more! Do you play Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic the Gathering, or another card game? Bring your friends and stake out a corner of the room for an epic game.

Don't get off school early that day? Come as soon as you can, or come on Saturday, November 15 for drop-in board games and card games from 1 - 4 p.m.

Marion RePurpose Club
Tuesday, November 18, 6 - 8 p.m.

The Marion RePurpose Club meets monthly on the third Tuesday.

This month we'll be making holiday wreaths from discarded books!

This fun intergenerational crafting and repurposing evening is offered by Habitat for Humanity's ReStore staff. Yvette and Deb bring their fun and creativity to the Marion Library, along with all the stuff you need to repurpose leftovers, bits, and pieces into cool and unique things that you can really use.

Because of our space constraints, and to help Deb and Yvette know how many supplies to bring, registration is required.

There is a small materials fee ($5/adult, $3/under 16) which may be paid at the program.

November is National Novel Writing Month!

November 1 - 30

And the library is the perfect place to write a novel! We've got public computers to use and laptops to check out if you're over 18. Remember, if you use one of our computers, you'll need your own flash drive or webspace to save your work.

If you have your own laptop, we have study rooms and tables with nearby plug-ins. There's also Wi-Fi, though you might want to keep that turned off in order to focus on your writing. :)

How to write your novel in just 30 days (or at least get a good start):

Need some inspiration?

  • The library has lots of writing how-to books. Look in the 808s section or ask the Information Desk for help finding them.
  • Here's a tip: can't think of a good name for a character? Check out the baby name books in the 929.4 area for ideas.
  • And if you want to see published books that were written during the month-long frenzy of NaNoWriMo, here's a list of authors to check out.

Happy noveling!

What Would You Say to Your Favorite Author?

First deadline December 15

The Letters About Literature contest wants to know. To enter, write a letter to an author (living or dead!) where you talk about a fiction, non-fiction, play, or poetry book that had a big impact on you. But don't mail it to the author! Send it to The Center for the Book at the Library of Congress, where it will be entered into a contest for cash prizes! This yearly contest starts with winners in each state, who then compete at the national level.

Anyone in grades 4 - 12 can enter the contest. The deadlines for each age group are:

High school, grades 9-12

December 15, 2014

Middle School and younger, grades 4 - 8

January 15, 2015

Visit
read.gov/letters for more information and examples of previous winners and download the rules and entry form (pdf).

Good luck! Let us know if you win!

Book a Trip Across America:
All Ages Reading Program

Book a Trip with us at the library! This year-round reading program couldn't be easier: pick up a reading log with a map, and all you have to do is read books. Check off each state as you read a book that either takes place in that state, is about that state, or is by an author who is from that state. Read fiction or non-fiction. We have lists of suggested titles for kids, teens, and adults, but you can pick your own titles, too!

We have a huge map of the United States here at the library, and when you check off a state on your reading log, you can come in and get a colored dot from one of our friendly staff, then go put it on the state you've just finished! We can all have fun watching as Marion Library readers read their way across the USA!

Weigh In On Marion's Future!
Survey deadline November 21

Marion is working to create a unified vision for the community; a vision that will bring new business and investment to the area, grow tourism and visitor spending, increase business revenues, and drive Marion's future.

The next step as we work to identify what sets Marion apart from other communities is to gather community feedback. Please take a moment to complete the nine question online survey at bit.ly/brand-marion and invite your friends and neighbors - both in and out of the Marion area - to do the same.

Deadline for completing the branding survey is November 21. Thanks for caring about your community!
