Summer Reading is going great! We have around 300 babies and 1,800 kids signed up and reaching reading goals like crazy!

If you're not signed up yet, there's still time. You can sign up online or here at the library. We have programs for ALL AGES--Adults, Teens, Kids, and Babies


We have events for you and your kids almost every day of the week. Look below for what's happening in July.

The last day to collect prizes and to get entered for our Grand Prizes is Friday, July 25th before 4:45 p.m. 


Our Final Party: The Big Bubble Blowout will be Saturday, July 26th with crafts and fun in Marion Square park at 1:00 and Bubble Wonders Show and Grand Prize Drawing at 2:00 in the library meeting room. We hope to see you there!

June Story Time Schedule

 

STORY TIME BREAK begins Monday 7/28* 

 

Baby Time 

(0-18 months)

Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.

(15 minutes of structured time followed by free play)

Baby Time is a language enrichment program just for babies. It is an enjoyable time for you and your child full of rhymes, short books, bounces, and much more.

 

Toddler Time 

(18 months-3 years)

Tuesdays & Fridays at 10:00 a.m. (20 minutes)  

Toddler Time is a great way to build early literacy skills and a love of reading from an early age! We do lots of songs, rhymes, fingerplays, and books that will keep even the wiggliest toddlers engaged and learning.

 

Preschool Story Time 

(3-5 years)

Tuesdays & Wednesdays at 10:45 a.m. (30 minutes)

We have lots of great stories to share with your preschoolers! On top of the books we have fun songs, rhymes, and activities for you and your kiddos.

7/22 10:45 Learning Safari: The Oldest Finger Painting in the World

Historians and archaeologists have discovered the world's oldest finger painting in a cave in the African country of Botswana. Come out and learn all about the world's oldest finger paintings and even make a few of your own. 

 

7/23 10:30 a.m. Blank Park Zoo: Weird Animal Science  

Did you know ducks have feathers that are waterproof? And salamanders can hear with no ears? Animals are capable of some fantastic feats! This program will demonstrate how it is possible for animals to do the amazing things they can do. 

 

*7/29 11:45 Doodlebugs: Pointillism
Seurat will take us on a trip to the Island of La Grande Jatte. See what happens when you connect the dots to make your own masterpiece.

 

 

Family Story Time at Lowe Park!

(All Ages)

Wednesdays at 10:45 a.m. through July 23rd (30 minutes)

 

We're excited to offer a story time for all ages at Lowe Park this summer. We will incorporate stories, movement, songs, and rhymes to build literacy and have fun. Depending on the weather, we may be outside. Lowe Park is located in northern Marion at 4500 N 10th Street. There are lots of open spaces, gardens, art displays, and a playground. Bring a picnic and make a morning of it!

Family Fusion: 

Mondays at 6:30 p.m.

Family Fusion is a mix of crazy experiments, fun guests, and cool crafts. Come check out what's new every Monday at 6:30 and bring the whole family! 

 

7/7 KABLOOEY! Science Center of Iowa

Join the Science Center of Iowa on an exhilarating adventure through the world of science. Together, we'll explore air pressure, sound waves and how things fizz, bubble and pop through a variety of exciting experiments. Plus, you'll learn some safe science that you can do in your own backyard. You don't want to miss this!

 

7/14 Mad Science Party

It's alive!!! That is--the Mad Science Party at the Marion Library will be. We'll have science-themed games, crafts, and yummy food.

 

7/21 Make Your Own Bouncy Ball

Learn about cool chemical reactions as you make your own bouncy ball! You can choose your favorite colors and mix up some crazy goop that will turn into a homemade bouncy ball you get to take home.

Big Show Wednesdays

Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. 

Every Wednesday afternoon during the summer we'll have exciting shows and fun guests for one and all! 

 

7/9 KCRG Weather Presentation

Why do clouds form? How hot is the Sun? What do the squiggly lines on weather maps really mean? We'll take an inside look at the weather that surrounds us every second of every day, how it happens, and explore the clues that tell us what's to come.

 

7/16 Biggest Chemistry Show EVER!

Come learn about chemical reactions, science safety, and states of matter through this wild and crazy show! This demonstration earned the Grout Museum a place in the record books. Appropriate for all ages.

 

7/23 Chalk the Walk

Come decorate our sidewalks with your own unique art! Make homemade chalk, watch chalk explode, draw yourself into a fun scene, play hopscotch, or come up with your own chalk game.

Thursday Movies, Games, and Lego Club!

Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. 

Thursdays are fun days! We'll be showing movies, playing games, or building with Legos every Thursday afternoon.

 

7/10 Lego Club

Get creative with everyone's favorite building blocks! Build with our stash of Legos once per month on the second Thursday. 


7/17 Movie: Frozen (PG)

Fearless optimist Anna teams up with Kristoff in an epic journey, encountering Everest-like conditions, and a hilarious snowman named Olaf in a race to find Anna's sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom in eternal winter.

 

7/24 Game Day

Come hang out in our air conditioned meeting room and play with the library's fantastic assortment of Wii, Xbox, PS3, and board games. We've got Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Dance Central, Guitar Hero, Twister, Apples to Apples, and more!

 

If you play Magic or Yu-Gi-Oh or another trading card game, feel free to stake out a corner of the room to play. Want to share your love for a favorite board game? Bring it along! Teens and kids welcome. Children under 9 must be accompanied by an adult.

Summer Meals

Monday-Friday, 11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. June 16th-August 15th 

The Marion Public Library and Horizons Family Services will offer a Free Lunch Program this summer. Any child under 18 can get a FREE lunch here at the library Monday-Friday, and grown ups can purchase a meal for only $3.50. Feed your body and feed your brain by checking out books, using our computers, or attending one of our programs. 
Family Yoga

Wednesday, July 9th, 16th, and 23rd at 8:30 a.m.

Family Yoga is a fun way to get an energizing morning workout in for you and your child. This class combines yoga postures with games, props and storytelling. Everyone participates! Children see the adults doing the poses, and then learn how to do it themselves. There's no forcing or trying to be perfect. It's all about getting involved at each child's level. With nurturing guidance and loving patience, every child and grown up will feel accepted, have loads of fun, and get to relax. For children ages 4-12 and their caregivers. Wear comfy clothes and bring your own yoga mat or a towel and a water bottle.

Dan Wardell's Storytime Adventures!

Tuesday, July 15th at 10:00 a.m. & 11:00 a.m.

 

Dan Wardell, of IPTV fame, will be stopping by Marion Public Library on his Reading Roadtrip across the state. Come share in his zany story time adventures! It will be Dantastic!

Magic of Reading Show!

Saturday, July 19th at 1:30 p.m.  

The Magic of Reading Show is just plain fun: magic, comedy, juggling, and Duo, the World's Only White "Killer" Dove (OK so he's not really a killer, but he couldn't afford a tiger). Your kids will also hear important messages about reading and learning. Unlike some presentations designed just for kids, this show is especially designed for all ages to enjoy and experience together!
