Summer is just around the corner! Scroll down to check out exciting info about what you can expect from our science-themed Summer Reading Program: Fizz, Boom, READ! You can sign up online or here at the library starting Monday, June 2nd.    

The last two weeks of May we're taking a break from all story times in order to do school visits and to get ready for summer.

Marion Public Library will be closed on Sunday, May 25th and Monday, May 26th for Memorial Day. Our summer hours begin on June 1st (see side column for details).

May Story Time Schedule

 

Baby Time 

(0-18 months)

Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.*

(15 minutes of structured time followed by free play)

Baby Time is a language enrichment program just for babies. It is an enjoyable time for you and your child full of rhymes, short books, bounces, and much more! 

*No Baby Time May 22nd or 29th

 

Toddler Time 

(18 months-3 years)

Tuesdays & Fridays at 10:00 a.m.* (20 minutes)  

Toddler Time is a great way to build early literacy skills and a love of reading from an early age! We do lots of songs, rhymes, fingerplays, and books that will keep even the wiggliest toddlers engaged and learning!

Preschool Story Time 

(3-5 years)

Tuesdays & Wednesdays at 10:45 a.m.* (30 minutes)

We have lots of great stories to share with your preschoolers! On top of the books we have fun songs, rhymes, and activities for you and your kiddos!

Introducing: Learning Safari!

Wednesday, May 14th at 10:45 a.m.  

Marion Public Library and the African American Museum of Iowa are teaming up to bring you a new story time experience: Learning Safari! Learning Safari is a special story time and craft for preschoolers focused on African and African American history and culture.

 

Theme for May: Glittering Gold!
The Ghana Empire was based on the trade of one of the worlds favorite treasures: Gold. Today we'll search for gold and make a "golden" figure of our own.
Doodlebugs: Symbolism

The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art leads preschool art classes at Marion Public Library every month. 
 
Klimt's golden paints will be the stars in our May class. Kids will create their own shining art piece with colorful shapes and symbols.
Summer Reading Program 2014: Fizz, Boom, READ!

Fast Facts:

  • Fizz, Boom, READ! is for Kids age 3-5th grade (this fall) & Babies 0-36 months.
  • Sign up online at marionpubliclibrary.org or here at MPL.
  • Last day to enter reading DAYS/HOURS is Friday, July 25th before 4:45 p.m. (Grand Prize Drawings and Big Bubble Blowout! are Saturday, July 26th from 1:00-3:00 p.m.)
  • We have teen and adult programs too. Sign up your whole family!

Special Summer Programs

We're excited about some new programs coming this summer:

  • Family Yoga from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Wednesday mornings sign up for our 4 week series in June or July. This class combines yoga postures with games, props and storytelling. Everyone participates! Children see the adults doing the poses, and then learn how to do it themselves. There's no forcing or trying to be perfect. We will have loads of fun as well as relaxation. For children ages 4-10. Children must be accompanied by their parent or caregiver. Wear comfy clothes and bring your own yoga mat or a towel and a water bottle.
  • Lowe Park Family Story Time Wednesdays at 10:45 a.m. We're excited to take story time North to Lowe park. Everyone is welcome, but we will aim our stories and activities toward toddlers through preschoolers.
  • Summer Break Spot: Free Lunch Program this summer any child under 18 can get a FREE lunch here at the library Monday-Friday, and grown ups can purchase a meal for only $3.50. Feed your body and feed your brain by checking out books, using our computers, or attending one of our programs. If you'd like to volunteer to help with this important program to keep our kids healthy this summer contact Ms. Olivia (info below)
  • On My Own & Ok taught by the ISU Extension will take place in 4 sessions August 4th, 5th, 11th & 12th from 12:30-2:00 p.m. If your school-age children spend time alone during the day, sign them up for this informative program. Topics include feelings about being home alone, safety and emergency situations, routines, sibling responsibilities and use of leisure time.

Calling All Volunteers!

May-July 2014

Do you want to serve your community and promote literacy this summer? We'd love for you to volunteer to help with our Summer Reading Program. We are specifically looking for people who have experience working with children and who enjoy their energetic ways!

Spring Book Sale
May 16-18

Explore a super collection of gently used books, movies, and music and get the best prices in town. Hours on Friday are 4:00-6:00 p.m. and the sale is open to Friends members only; however, you can purchase a membership at the door for just $10. Extra bonus this year for Friends members! Choose one FREE book of equal or lesser value for any book you purchase at the sale on Friday night onlyBook sale hours on Saturday are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and on Sunday, stop in between 2:00 and 3:30 for all the best deals everyone else missed all weekend and get a bag of books for just $2.00!
