December 2013

We have some super fun things for you and your kids planned for December.  We will be a cozy place to make crafts and warm up during Christmas in the Park.  We have Santa's Mailbox in our lobby all month long--so bring your wishlists here and we'll make sure they get to the North Pole.  Enjoy the visit from Music Together, and learn about the importance to bringing music into your home.  There will be lots of messy and snuggly fun at our Monday night Family Times. And we're ringing in the new year with our Happy Noon Year event on the 31st!

Remember, we're taking a break from all of our story times from December 23rd-January 4th so we can prepare for our Winter Reading Program: Kids Create! which begins Monday, January 6th!

Sincerely,

Olivia Stoner

Planning on doing some Christmas shopping this year? Include us in your plans! Mention Marion Public Library as you check out at Barnes & Noble on November 30, and we get a percentage of the sale!

Visit your favorite librarians at our table morning or afternoon on the 30th. Need some ideas for gift-giving (or just yourself)? Ask us for book recommendations and make a bonus bookmark. Also, our Friends group will be gift-wrapping for free!

Or if you're shopping online, visit bn.com between November 30 and December 5 and enter Bookfair ID 11189560 to make a donation that costs you nothing at all.

Here's how:
At the checkout screen, go the Payment section and select Change.

Scroll all the way to the bottom of that page and check the box that says "this is a Bookfair Order."

Insert our Bookfair ID 11189560.

You get books in the mail, and we get donations from B&N that let us buy awesome reading program prizes like Nook tablets. Everybody wins!

THANK YOU for supporting your library!

Christmas in the Park!
Friday, December 6th  between
5:00-6:30 p.m.

Make some memories here at the library!  Families are invited to the library during Christmas in the Park to warm up and make cinnamon dough ornaments that will hang on your tree and smell delicious for years to come.

While you wait, listen to the holiday tuba ensemble and browse our Friends bookstore--you might find a great gift for someone special.

We will also have Santa's Mailbox during the entire month of December for kids to send their special notes to the North Pole!

Lego Club
Thursday, December 12 between
3:00 and 5:00

Have Lego lovers in your house?  Bring them to build with our stash of Legos the second Thursday of each month.  We'll display their creations here at the library, and even do all the clean up!

Thanks to all the generous people who donated Legos! Would you like to donate? We'd be glad to take them and share the Lego love!

Doodlebugs
Tuesday, December 17 at 10:45 a.m.
doodlebugs logo

They fly through the air with the greatest of ease ... We'll read Sandy's Circus, a story about an artist who created mobiles, and then we'll make fluttery hanging artwork of our own.

Doodlebug's fall semester celebrates the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art's new exhibition, "Some Assembly Required," which features works of collage and assemblage from CRMA's collection. We are creating works of art from a huge array of materials, so prepare for some messy and unique projects!

R.E.A.D Dogs
Sunday, December 22 between 2:30 and 4:00 p.m.

Bring your kids to read to our Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) to grow their skills, confidence, and love of reading!

The dogs are all registered therapy dogs who are patient, friendly and are good listeners. Dogs don't care about a reader's abilities, help kids relax, and offer a new setting for practicing reading aloud. Research and anecdotal evidence show that children can improve their reading skills and confidence by reading to a dog. And, it's fun!

Happy NOON Year!
Tuesday, December 31 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Ring in the New Year just a bit early with your whole family (perfect if someone has an early bedtime!)  We will create noisemakers, have a dance party, eat yummy snacks, drink sparkling juice, and watch our own ball drop in the lobby!
