Marion Library Reading Groups Newsletter
  Dec 2013/Jan 2014

Keep your mind off the cold this winter with library reading opportunities both familiar and new. We're winding up our Salon Series for the year on December 5 and preparing for our best ever adult winter reading program which begins January 6. We hope you will take time this Holiday Season to indulge in some reading and attend a library program or two. You'll be glad you did!

Sincerely,

Marion Public Library

Winter Reading Program for Adults

Mark your calendar! Our adult winter reading program runs January 6 through February 15. This year's theme--Fill Your Bucket: What's on Your Bucket List? will inspire you to set new goals, have some fun, and read like there's no tomorrow. We'll have weekly programs, weekly prizes, and conclude with grand prizes and a Wine Social (yes, wine at the library!) on Friday, February 21, 5:30-7:30pm. Don't miss it--there will be door prizes and live music, too!
Sign-up for the reading program, get program details, and print your reading log beginning January 6 at our website or in person at the Information Desk.

History Club

We're cozying up with a good, long history read this month, The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson. In this epic, beautifully written masterwork, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson chronicles one of the great untold stories of American history: the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled the south for northern and western cities, in search of a better life. From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Our discussion will take place on January 9, 3:30pm at The Heritage Center.
We are an enthusiastic group of learners who love to talk history--check out what we'll be reading next at our Book Groups Page.

Coffeehouse Fiction

Explore New Worlds

Our Coffeehouse Fiction book discussions will challenge you to read books that may not have captured your attention before. Looking for a fun group where you can share books? Even if you don't care for a book, or if it wouldn't have been something you chose, talking about it with others will often give you a new perspective. For our December Coffeehouse Fiction discussion, we are reading science fiction: a book from one of the most renowned sci-fi authors: Orson Scott Card. We hope you'll challenge yourself this Holiday Season and pick up a copy of Ender's Game, then join us to talk about it at Wit's End Coffeehouse (630 10th St, Marion) at 4 :00pm on Tuesday, December 17. The library will buy you a treat from the coffeehouse; you can purchase a beverage of your choice if you like. Maybe Cathy will have the fireplace on for us! Hope to see you there.
Want to find out what we're reading next? See the next few months' reads on our Book Groups Page.

Check out our Season's Readings!

Did you know the library has hundreds of holiday books? We could fit only a few on our holiday display, but peruse the stacks for books with holiday-themed spine labels (like candy canes and Christmas trees), check them out--there are loads of them--and give yourself the gift of reading this Holiday Season.
