We'd like to draw your attention this month most particularly to the informational article just below about the upcoming vote to increase the library's levy, and that to renew the local option sales tax. We encourage you to become informed about these issues and to vote on November 5.

Thanks to all who brought your children in for Halloween story times and trick-or-treating at the library! We enjoyed sharing in their fun and seeing the costumes. Now, off for Thanksgiving preparations!

Marion Public Library Levy and
Local Option Sales Tax
What You Need to Know

On November 5, the citizens of Marion will have the opportunity to vote on two measures that will have a tremendous impact on the future of the city's library services. One measure asks voters to increase the library levy and the other asks them to renew the current one cent local option sales tax.

Be an informed voter. Learn more about the library levy and the local option sales tax renewal, and beef up on our local City Council candidates; then, get out to the polls on Tuesday, November 5. The Marion Library is a polling place; to find out where you vote, give us a call (319-377-3412) or visit the Linn County Election Portal
Adult Writing Group
Meets 1st Monday Each Month

Next Meeting: Monday, November 4 @ 6:30

The Marion Library is happy to offer a writing group open to aspiring authors. The group meets on the fist Monday of each month at 6:30. Meetings will be opportunities to associate with other writers in a variety of ways including fellowship, advice and sharing, and accountability. Participants will do different things such as writing prompts, discussing readings, and critiques. The next meeting is Monday, November 4. Writers should bring a writing activity, a reading, or a piece for critique or discussion. For further information or if you can't make it and wish to be informed of future meetings, contact Rachel Cochran, the group coordinator, at reikrc@gmail.com.

Come Write In Sessions
Throughout November

Meeting Times: 2-4 p.m. on Nov. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30

The library is hosting five Come Write In events this November to support our local writers who are attempting National Novel Writing Month. Join us every Saturday 2 - 4 p.m. in the Conference Room to scribble or type away with your fellow Wrimos. If you're writing something other than a novel, come write along anyway--the more the merrier. Bring your laptop and plug in to our power strips or check out a 90-minute library laptop if you're over 18 (photo ID required). New to National Novel Writing Month? It's an annual event where thousands of people all over the world attempt to write 50,000 words of a novel in just 30 days. Learn more on NaNoWriMo.org. For other Come Write In events around the metro area, check out the Cedar Rapids forum. The library has resources for writers of all ages. Ask at the Information Desk for suggestions.

FREE Personal Finance Workshops

Next Meeting: Thursday, November 14 @ 6 p.m.

Professional financial advisers from Principal Financial offer free no-obligation financial literacy classes here at the library on some of the tough personal finance issues you face. Please join them for these great monthly sessions and learn how to manage your money better to meet your own personal goals. Come on Thursday, November 14 at 6 p.m. for "Retirement Readiness: Are You Ready to Shift Gears?"

Buffalo Bill: Never Missed and He Never Will

Program details: Tuesday, November 12 @ 7 p.m.

Join us at the Library for a Humanities Iowa presentation featuring Iowa's own Buffalo Bill and presented by Roy R. Behrens. William F. Cody (1846-1917), better known as "Buffalo Bill," was born near Le Claire, Iowa, in Scott County, just north of Davenport. By the end of his life, he had become what some have called "the most famous American in the world." This program offers an overview of Cody's life, both tragic and heroic. As a Wild West performer, it is thought that Cody probably played to a collective audience of more than 50 million, including in various Iowa towns. This is a fast-paced and entertaining 45-minute talk, illustrated by projected vintage photographs, film clips and animated graphics. The program is offered by Friends of the Marion Library and is free to all.
