Come Write In for National Novel Writing Month
|
|
Every Saturday in November from 2:00-4:00 p.m.
The Library is hosting five Come Write In events this November to support our local writers who are attempting National Novel Writing Month. Join us every Saturday 2 - 4 p.m. in the Conference Room to scribble or type away with your fellow Wrimos. If you're writing something other than a novel, come write along anyway--the more the merrier.
Writers kindergarten-age through high-school-age can find more information at the Young Writers Program website, including workbooks to get them started and suggested word-count goals by grade.
New to National Novel Writing Month? It's an annual event where thousands of people all over the world attempt to write 50,000 words of a novel in just 30 days. Learn more on NaNoWriMo.org.
The library has resources for writers of all ages. Ask at the Children's Desk for suggestions.

International Games Day
|
|
Saturday, November 16th from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Marion Public Library and hundreds of libraries across the country and around the world will join the American Library Association (ALA) in celebrating the popularity and educational value of games for International Games Day @ your library on November 16, 2013.
Learn how to play Yu-Gi-Oh! and find other players in the area. There will be 3 demonstration sessions at 10:00, 12:00 and 2:00, but a Yu-Gi-Oh! expert will be here all day, so stop by any time!
Join in a world-wide game of Telephone (aka Global Gossip)! We will get the secret message whispered to us sometime during the day, which we get to pass on to our patrons. Then we will call another library across the country and pass on our own version of the secret phrase!
We also have a great collection of board games--Including Tapple and Cross Ways which are new games this year! They will be available for friends and families to play throughout the day. Try out a new one, or play an old favorite!
Stop by and game on!

Doodlebugs become litter bugs today. We're collecting "found objects" to create sculptures like Grant Wood's "Lilies of the Alley."
Doodlebug's fall semester celebrates the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art's new exhibition, Some Assembly Required, which features works of collage and assemblage from CRMA's collection. We'll spend this autumn creating works of art from a huge array of materials, so prepare for some messy and unique projects!

R.E.A.D. Dogs
|
|
Sunday, November 24th between 2:00 and 3:30 p.m.
Bring your kids to read to our Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) to grow their skills, confidence, and love of reading! The dogs are all registered therapy dogs who are patient, friendly and are good listeners. Dogs don't care about a reader's abilities, help kids relax and offer a new setting for practicing to read aloud. Research and anecdotal evidence show that children can improve their reading skills and confidence by reading to a dog. And it's fun!
