eReader Learning Sessions

We have scheduled several sessions this month to help you learn how to download library ebooks to your ereader. Just come to any one; bring your ereader, any cords you have for it, and your questions. We'll do our best to get you set up and comfortable with the process.

Wednesday, Sept 4 - 3:00

Tuesday, Sept 17 - 2:00

Monday, Sept 23 - 3:30

Greetings!

It's National Library Card Sign-up Month, and we're celebrating library cards all month with drawings for three Nook Tablets. There has never been a better time to get yourself a library card than right now. You can sign up no more than one time each day throughout September. You must have a valid library card with fines below $20, and you have to have your card or know your number to enter; staff won't look up your number for you for this contest. This is a great time to get your fines paid off and to check and make sure we have your current contact information, because we'll need to contact you if you win - don't miss out because we have an old phone number or email address. All ages are eligible! Winners will be drawn on Tuesday, October 1. And, if you don't have a card - the sooner you get yours, the more chances you have to win.

We're pleased to introduce to you as our third author Dini Parayitam, who visits for a program on Thursday, September 19 at 7pm. Get a taste of her writing by enjoying one of her short stories here.We partner with the Campbell Steele Gallery, which provides a lovely intimate salon setting for our series. Admission is free; come and spend an evening getting to know a bright young voice. We'll provide light hors d'oeuvres and Campbell Steele offers a cash bar.

New Writers Group Inspired by
Celebrate Writing Event

Were you inspired by the Celebrate Writing event held last month? Is there a story percolating inside of you, and you'd like advice on how to tell it? Perhaps you've been working on your manuscript for a while and seek the critique and camaraderie of other writers. The library is pleased to invite writers of all interests and levels to join a new writers group. We welcome everyone 18 years and older from new to experienced who compose fiction, non-fiction, creative non-fiction, family stories/memoirs, etc. (For those under 18, there is an already established Teen Writers Group that meets the third Thursday of the month 3:30-5:00 p.m.)

The library will host a kick-off event on Thursday, September 26 at 7pm at the library. For further information or if you can't make it and wish to be informed of future meetings, contact Rachel Cochran, the group coordinator, at [email protected].
FREE Personal Finance Workshops

We are lucky to have professionals from Principal Financial to walk you through some of the tough personal finance issues you face. Please join them for free monthly sessions and learn how to manage your money better to meet your own personal goals. Come on Thursday, September 12 at 6pm for "Coping With Roller Coaster Markets." In the current low interest rate environment, the market can be a scary place for the average investor. We'll provide tips for helping with the stress of investment anxiety, for being disciplined, and for making the most of the current up and down markets.

Coffeehouse Fiction

Our next Coffeehouse Fiction meeting will be Tuesday, September 17 at 4 pm. The Library partners with Wit's End Coffeehouse, and meets there (630 10th St), just across from the library and Marion Square Park. Our title for this month is this summer's hot title,  A Hundred Summers, by Beatriz Williams. The library's copies are currently all checked out, so get yourself on a reserve list or pick up a copy from your favorite local bookseller.  Cathy's shop is a fun, casual, and comfy place to talk books! We hope you'll join us for this great discussion group.
