Greetings!

School is back in session, the weather is cooling off and the nights are getting longer:  It's a great time to make time for reading! Check out our terrific reading group opportunities for adults: We'll have our annual Friends author dinner, book discussions, Humanities Iowa programs, and EVEN MORE author visits.

If all these reading opportunities are also inspiring the writer in you--well, we're proud to introduce a new writing group--see details below.

Join us for any or all of our reading and writing events!

Sincerely,
Marion Library Staff
Annual Friends Author Dinner

Please join us for our annual Friends Author Dinner on Tuesday, October 8. This event is a fundraiser for the Friends of the Marion Library.
For 2013, we are proud to present Kathryn Miller Haines in a return engagement. Ms. Haines is the author of four adult novels (The War Against Miss Winter, The Winter of Her Discontent, Winter in June, When Winter Returns) and two young adult novels (The Girl is MurderThe Girl is Trouble).

Our event begins with a social hour at 6:00pm followed by dinner at 6:30pm; Ms. Haines will speak after dinner.

Tickets may be purchased from any Friends member or at the Information Desk; the cost to attend is $25. There is a limited number of tickets available, so purchase yours soon.

Coffeehouse Fiction

Join the discussion: The library partners with Wit's End Coffeehouse and meets the third Tuesday each month, 4:00pm-5:00pm, at the coffeehouse (630 10th St), just across from the library and Marion Square Park.

On Tuesday, October 15 we'll discuss Home by Marilynne Robinson, a refreshingly honest portrait of familial relationships over time -- at once both profoundly sad and hopeful.

And then on Tuesday, November 19 we'll discuss Digging to America by Anne Tyler. This novel, about two families who become intertwined when they both adopt Korean girls, explores the notions of fitting in, of what it means to be "different", of what it is to be an "American", of what must be lost of the self to join a community.

A limited number of copies of the next months' titles are distributed at each meeting, or individual copies can be checked out from our catalog, or pick up a copy from your favorite local bookseller.

Come hungry! The library springs for a round of treats; beverages are available to purchase. Out of respect for the proprietor, please do not bring in your own food or drinks. Cathy's shop is a fun, casual, and comfy place to talk books! We hope you'll join us for this great discussion group.

History Club
History Club

The History Club meets the second Thursday of each month, 3:30pm - 5:00pm at the Heritage Center (590 10 St).

This lively discussion group is a collaboration with the Marion Historical Society.

The Undivided Past On October 10 we'll discuss  by David Cannadine. Although our past is marked by conflict; it is also full of examples of cooperation -- our common humanity binds us together.

A Slave in the White House And then on November 14
we'll discuss A Slave in the White House: Paul Jennings and the Madisons
by Elizabeth Dowling Taylor. An unsettling story of a Founding Father and his slave.

Friends of the Marion Library are proud to present the following programs courtesy of a grant from Humanities Iowa:

October 14 at 6:30pm
Celebrate the first Nancy Drew mystery and her creator Mildred Augustine of Ladora, Iowa with presenter Barbara Lounsberry.

November 4 at 6:30pm
Laura Ingalls Wilder expert Sarah Uthoff will share her Wilder wisdom.

November 12 at 7:00pm
Roy R. Behrens will present an entertaining multi-media talk on Iowa's Buffalo Bill.

Lost Linn County

Lost Linn County

Join us Tuesday, October 29 at 6:30pm for a historical evening with Linda Betsinger McCann, whose new book, Lost Linn County, comes out this month. Over 200 named locations have been found in Linn County. These range from Flemingville, Rural, Shingle Town, or Palisades, which all had post offices, to Buck Horn Grove or Tissel Hollow, which were natural sites. Learn about names that have changed (Cedar Rapids was Colombus), spellings that have changed, and nicknames (Marion was Grove City).

Lost Linn County is Linda's 22nd book, and the 5th in her Vanished Towns of the Cedar Valley series. She is currently working on Prohibition in the Cedar Valley. Linda will have books available to purchase, or visit The Iowan to buy copies in advance.
