1st Annual Marion Quilt Walk
|
The Marion Library will participate in the community's 1st Annual Quilt Walk on August 17! We'll have a number of quilts displayed. Plan to spend the day in Uptown Marion. This event is the inspiration of The Cottage Rose and Connie's Quilt Shop, and many Uptown merchants will be participating (see list at their website). Each shop will put its own spin on this event. The main focus will be for each to hang a quilt either inside or outside (maybe both!); celebrity judges will tour each shop to determine awards. Community members will get passport tickets which they can have punched at each business to be eligible for various drawings.

Beach Reads
|
What makes a book a Beach Read, anyway? Is it light-weight or light reading? Does it require little concentration or is it so engrossing you can't put it down? Tell us your favorite Beach Read of the Summer by filling out a drawing slip at the book display near the Information Desk. The winner will receive a $10 gift certificate from Wit's End - then treat yourself and a book buddy to cold smoothies and talk over your favorite reads of the Summer! Haven't had time to enjoy a Beach Read yet? No worries! There's still plenty of Summer left - grab a book from our display, enter the drawing, and get lost in a good book - drawing on Tuesday, September 3.

Chasing4Life Programs
On Saturday, August 3 we'll have a team here from Chasing4Life's disaster response unit to do four programs throughout the day (including two for children as part of summer reading).
They will present two programs for adults and teens. The first, "Heart of a Hero" at 2:30pm, is a look at what happens when we dig deep inside ourselves to find that thing that makes us help others. It's about how first responders do their jobs and what those jobs are (such as K9, search and rescue, fire, police, etc.). BONUS - this program includes a demonstration of the search drone, which can be flown both inside and outside. If the weather's nice, get a bird's eye view of Marion!
At 4pm, Chasing4Life presents the "Severe Weather Readiness" program, an updated version of the "Storm Chasers" program you may have seen before. Presenters talk about climate change, severe weather safety, home disaster kits, and lots more. The Chasing4Life programs are guaranteed to be show-stoppers that you won't want to miss!

The Cedar Valley Road
A Project Read Program Presented by Linda McCann
Linda is the author of several local history books, including The Cedar Valley Road. The Waterloo, Cedar Falls, & Northern Railway operated for over fifty years and had an impact on many lives during its existence. Even now, people can recall the conductor on "their" car, or talk about riding the "trolley" to college. Farmers rode the Northern Iowa rail to town to sell their produce, and factories in Waterloo shipped by the Cedar Valley Road. Come listen to Linda share this fascinating history. She'll have books available to purchase as well. Visit The Iowan's website to buy your copy in advance.

Coffeehouse Fiction
Our next Coffeehouse Fiction meeting will be Tuesday, September 17 at 4 pm. The Library partners with Wit's End Coffeehouse, and meets at the coffeehouse (630 10th St), just across from the library and Marion Square Park. A limited number of copies of this summer's hot title, A Hundred Summers, are available for those interested in joining us for the discussion. Contact the Information Desk beginning August 1 and we'll reserve copies on a first come first served basis - then pick up your copy anytime after August 15. Can't wait that long? Get a jump-start on your reading by checking our catalog for individual copies or picking up a copy from your favorite local bookseller. Cathy's shop is a fun, casual, and comfy place to talk books! We hope you'll join us for this great discussion group.
