Salon Series Presents Voices to Watch
With this author series, new in 2013, the Metro Library Network presents new and aspiring voices from the UI Writer's Workshop! We're pleased to introduce to you as our second author Kyle Minor on Thursday evening, July 11 at 7pm. Get a taste for his writing by enjoying an early published essay. Intergenerational Puppet Production by Madcap
Everyone will enjoy this fantastic puppet show! Come to the library on Saturday, July 13 at 2pm when Madcap Productions Puppet Theatre presents The Cinderella Files. Ever wonder what would happen if Cinderella's Fairy Godmother went on vacation? In Madcap's twisted take on the classic fairy tale, it's up to her husband Ralph, the Fairy Godfather, to get Cinderella to the ball. With help from the audience, giant puppets, and the big wand, Ralph might have a chance. In this hilarious production, Madcap also explores Cinderella as it is told by the Scandinavians in Diamonds and Toads and the Indonesian version, The Crocodile's Baby. The show is appropriate for everyone ages 5 and up -- adults will enjoy it as much as children! You can see a snippet on YouTube. The performance is followed by a Q&A and puppet demonstration. This program is sponsored by Hills Bank & Trust, and they will provide snacks and trinkets for the children in the audience. There's no charge for this amazing show.

Our State Fair is a Great State Fair! But Then, You Already Knew That ...
This Humanities Iowa program will be presented by Mary Kay Shanley on Wednesday, July 24 at 7pm. Our State Fair - Iowa's Blue Ribbon Story is the book that chronicles 150 years of Iowans who have made up that unique August experience. Read their stories and you'll discover a bit of yourself - from watching two locomotives collide in front of a packed Grandstand to riding the roller coaster or sneaking a smooch with your sweetheart while gliding through Ye Old Mill, from parading your Charolais around the ring to watching judges test your pie crust, from camping in Tent City to eating your noon meal beside your car. Join author Mary Kay Shanley in a discussion of some of the book's very best tales, then share some of your own. Everybody, after all, has a great State Fair story to tell. And this free program arrives just in time to generate enthusiasm for the 2013 edition of the Fair itself!

Summer Reading Programs for Adults
If you haven't registered for summer reading, it's not too late! Join us for the Club Read 2013 summer reading program for adults: "The Short Story of a Teenage Vampire." The organizers created this catchy title because of the three areas on which they are focusing this summer: short stories, young adult/teen literature, and vampire stories. Visit our website to register. Club Read's summer program offers a variety of ways in which to participate.
