Business Spotlight: Cornerstone Copy & Print

The decision to open business in Elk Grove was easy for Bob Weber, general manager of Cornerstone Copy & Print.

"I'd been in the industry in other places, but it's so far driving back and forth. We really wanted to be local and close by. We opted to open in Elk Grove because of the convenience of being close to home. I live only a mile from the shop which is really nice!"

With more than $1 million in annual sales, Cornerstone Copy & Print is the largest digital copy and print facility in the Elk Grove region. The bulk of their business comes from state and federal government jobs, and they also work with other printers in the area.

"We do a lot of work with shops that don't have our type of equipment because we're a rather large shop compared to most shops," noted Weber. "We have a lot more equipment than most shops, and they're able to come to us and we can do the work for them."

Because of Elk Grove's centralized location in the Northern California region, the company's business stretches as far away as Stockton, Modesto and the San Francisco Bay Area, with the bulk of the business done in the Sacramento area.

"We're right off the freeway, and we do our own pickup and delivery. Our driver can run to downtown Sacramento, make a quick delivery and pickup, and be back to the office in a 25 minute round trip," noted Weber. "It's really convenient."

Living and working in Elk Grove means no traffic hassle and no stress in commuting.

"Living in Elk Grove has the convenience of being able to run home for lunch and not be worried about taking 20 minutes of a 30 minute lunch just getting back and forth--everything is close by. It's a big difference than being in Sacramento. It's all about quality of life, and I think that's the biggest thing. When you have a great job and all those wonderful things, but your quality of life isn't there because you're spending too much time worrying and stressing in traffic. But here, it's just another day--you don't dread waking up to go to work because everything is so close and so easy!"

With a centralized location, living in Elk Grove means enjoying the convenience of having everything a family needs close by but never being too far away from a fun-filled day-trip getaway.

"We can pretty much go any direction and have a very good day," said Weber whose family includes five children. "We can go to the ocean, we can go to the mountains, and we can go to the foothills. There are so many different places we can go to and come back in just a day. Elk Grove has the functionality of being centralized without the congestion of being in the downtown Sacramento area itself."

New City Policy Supports Economic Development in Industrial Areas
The permitting process has been expedited and fees reduced for businesses moving into Elk Grove's industrial spaces within in the city limits. Under the new policy, businesses moving into existing industrial spaces will no longer have to obtain a new building permit, as long as the previous owner had the required permits for the space and no additional construction work is required. The policy also allows for a Certificate of Occupancy to be transferred to similar businesses in industrial areas on spaces less than 3,000 square feet. The new policy will reduce fees and ensure an efficient transition into a new space. For more information visit www.elkgrovecity.org/building-permits or contact Sarah Sandoval at ssandoval@elkgrovecity.org or 916-478-3629.

Elk Grove Slashes Homebuilder Fees
The City of Elk Grove has eliminated the 97 cents/sf affordable housing fee that developers of office facilities have had to pay that funded a city program seeking housing for low-income residents. The fee, however, will remain unchanged and still be charged for commercial/retail, hotel, manufacturing and warehouses, and range from 46 cents to $1.36/sf. Residential impact fees for future homes were also reduced. For more information, contact the EGEDC at info@elkgroveedc.org

The City of Elk Grove's new personalized service, "T.I.
