Providence students eligible for Duke University program
Eight Providence Catholic School students recently received the honor of qualifying for eligibility in the Duke University's Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP). These bright seventh graders received this recognition because of their strong intellectual abilities, scoring at or above the 95th percentile on a recent grade-level test.
Academically talented students need new challenges, special motivation, and support. In addition to the challenging curriculum in the Providence middle school classrooms, students who qualify are given the opportunity to enroll in the Duke Tip program. They have access to the program's distinctive resources, and are registered to take either the ACT or SAT, tests designed for college-bound high school students, as a seventh grader.
"Providence Catholic School faculty and staff encourage and support all of our students to excel, said Alicia Garcia, Providence Principal. "We are especially pleased to offer qualifying seventh grade students the opportunity to enroll in the Duke University program. Each student, who endeavors to develop their knowledge and experiences, enriches the entire Providence Community."

College representatives serve up good information.
No event connects people better than face-to-face interaction. College representatives make appointments to visit Providence during our lunch periods so that they can talk with our students, share information about their institution and follow up with additional information at a later time.
Many of our students take full advantage of this opportunity. Texas A&M, DePaul University, the Air Force Academy, Our Lady of the Lake University, University of the Incarnate Word, American University, St. Edward's University, Regis University and Southwestern University have already made appointments to visit Providence in September and October.

Providence Sophomore kick starts dream to become a doctor
Nina Arteaga dreams of becoming a doctor. To make that dream a reality, Nina understands the benefits of volunteering and participating in programs designed for students seeking a career in medicine.
Last summer, Nina was one of approximately 24 students selected to participate in the University Hospital Junior Volunteer program. She completed 97 volunteer hours which included attending various lectures and sessions presented by medical and human resources professionals, and earning a CPR certificate. Through this experience Nina was able to give back to her community, and to meet students with similar goals and ambitions about pursuing a medical career.
During the school year, Nina will participate in the 2013-2014 MedPrep Program sponsored by the Mexican American Hispanic Physicians Association (MAHPA). The program runs one Saturday a month from August 2013-May 2014. She will be required to attend lectures, workshops and clinical rotations held at the Robert B. Green campus, as well as volunteer at MAHPA sponsored events.

Amazon Wish List
Providence Librarian, Desiree Benavides, continues to promote the "Providence Catholic School Library Wish List" on Amazon.com in an effort to give Providence supporters an easy way to donate new books to the library.
Last year, 93 new books were added to the Providence Library through the Amazon webpage.
"Our Providence ladies are avid readers; many go through several books a week," said Mrs. Benavides. "Our last shipment of donations came this summer, so students are ready for more great books to read."
Mrs. Benavides' goal is to create lifelong learners. New books that not only support the classroom curriculum, but also instill a passion for reading are crucial to student development.
If you purchase a book for the library, please include your name. Donors are recognized by a name plaque on the inside cover.
