Providence Choir sings songs of love
The Providence Catholic School Marian Choristers performed at a very special Valentine's Day event this year at Independence Hill Assisted Living Residence. "Chances Are" and "Some Enchanted Evening" were just a few of the love songs from the 1940's and 50's the choir sang for each of the 13 senior couples who participated in a wedding/vow renewal ceremony.
The chapel was decorated with hearts and flowers, and members of the happy couples' families were in attendance to share in the ceremonies. Residence Activities Director and 1977 Providence graduate Carolyn Burrell Crawford said, "Everyone was so impressed with the girls singing all those love songs. It really added to the event."
Providence Choir Director Elaine Bir shared, "The girls did a great job performing their songs. But more importantly, the girls received a life lesson. They witnessed long term relationships and a renewal of commitments... in health and some in not so good health. The girls were very touched by these elderly couples, holding sometimes shaking hands, or holding onto arms that gripped walkers...seeing them stretching and stretching to kiss each other." Providence Senior Olympia Cuellar added, "Seeing these couples married 50 years plus, definitely touched my heart. It inspired me to one day have an endless love like theirs."

Cultural and linguistic exchange
Oui, Providence has a French class intern. Gaëlle Emmery is spending three months in the classroom with French teacher Anne Hilton, to hone her teaching skills. Gaëlle attends Brussels University in Belgium. She will graduate this year with a teaching degree in French, allowing her to teach both French to native speakers and as a second language.
Gaëlle is enjoying her visit to the U.S. and loves the Texas winter weather. Hilton said, "Having her with us here at Providence gives the students the opportunity to be exposed to the French Culture in a unique way. They can practice their language skills and build cultural awareness through their interaction with her. We are blessed to have her!"

Providence students explore water issues at summit
Fourteen junior and senior students from Mr. Makar's science classes joined more than 800 students from high schools across the city for the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) 2nd Annual Confluence Summit. The Confluence Summit is designed both to explore the water issues facing San Antonio and to devise ways students can make a difference.
This year's summit focused on increasing the awareness of the escalation of grease in the water system and the hazard it has become by clogging our sewer pipes and causing sanitary sewer overflows. Gabby Macias said, "I was surprised to learn all the greasy substances that should not go down sink drains-peanut butter, fried foods, salad dressing, even butter and milk." Pinky Patel added, "It was interesting to know what is going on in the community in regards to our water system, and how we can help keep it clean and costs down." |
