Interested in fossils?

The COM Geology Club can bring science to you. Elementary and middle school students can examine the club's samples of rocks, minerals and fossils or explore volcanoes and earthquakes through hands-on models and activities.

Demonstrations can be tailored to your students' interests.

The Geology Club also sponsors free lectures by area geologists to explain natural phenomena along the Gulf Coast.

Schedule a job shadowing day at COM

During the first job shadowing day at COM facilitated by the nonprofit organization Junior Achievement, COM senior network engineer Aaron Hensley, left, explained how the virtual server cluster functions as "a storage unit for information" and enables all computers on campus to access the Internet.

In addition to a glimpse into the life of a network engineer, Texas City High School seniors explored burgeoning job opportunities in research, drafting and graphic design.

All systems go for former dual credit student

Isaiah Jones has been taking computers apart since childhood. He has been able to put them back together again successfully since he was 14.

Wanting to become a computer hardware engineer, the Texas City resident came to College of the Mainland as a dual credit student during his junior year of high school.

It allowed him to "ease into college" as he describes it. He is graduating from COM with an associate degree in general studies, ready to transfer to the University of Texas at San Antonio and pursue a bachelor's degree in computer science.

While completing his basic courses and serving the COM Police Department as a work-study student, he enjoyed learning with motherboards and keyboards rather than textbooks in several of his computer classes.

"Advisor Fatima (Abdeldaim) has helped me since I was a dual credit student," he remembered. "When I get to a university, I can just jump in and work with computers."

COM named fourth in nation in science technology graduates

A just-released report by the magazine Community College Week ranked COM fourth in the nation in the number of degrees awarded in 2012 in the science technologies/ technicians category. The publication based its report on U.S. Department of Education data showing 76 process technology graduates that year.

"We have a strong, rigorous program. All of our professors have 20-plus years of experience in the field. That's part of what makes our program unique," said COM process technology department chair Jerry Duncan.

David Gosnay, operations manager, derivatives, at LyondellBasell Industries, works with COM students through the internship partnership at that company created three years ago.

"Working with COM has been very beneficial for us. The students are well prepared, and our success rate with COM students is very high," said Gosnay. "We recruit from all local colleges, and COM students seem to be better prepared."
