"I was a very shy person when I came here.

Coming to COM Collegiate High School was how I had to step out of my comfort zone. Teachers and staff all work together to push you. They know you personally."

Why an associate degree?

Community college students save thousands of dollars compared to those at a university.

Once at a university, community college graduates are more likely to complete their four-year degrees.

COM graduates with technical degrees earned the highest median salary - $73,509 - of any new university or community college graduate in the state, according to College Measures.

From left, COM students Brooke Bartholomew, Natalie Jimenez, Thuy Van and Marc Gilbert proudly signed the Community College Completion Core pledge to complete their associate degree.
Want to be a nurse?

Prepare for a life-saving career as a registered nurse in College of the Mainland's Associate Degree Nursing Program, open for applications for the spring 2015 semester through Aug. 15 at 5 p.m.

With the demand for nurses projected to remain high, now is the perfect time to complete requirements to enter the field.

Students in COM's rigorous program learn through classroom instruction and clinical rotations in hospitals and other health care facilities in Galveston and on the mainland.

For more information about the orientation or application call 409-933-8425 or visit www.com.edu/nursing.

Post-apocalyptic lit class returns

Worlds collide and universes collapse in the novels and films explored in College of the Mainland's Post-Apocalyptic Lit course, back by popular demand this fall.

From the action-packed "Divergent" by Veronica Roth to poetic "The Dog Stars" by Peter Heller, the class explores literature and films examining a possible, not-so-brilliant future.

Incorporating elements of sci-fi, fantasy and thrillers, the novels and films are loved by all ages.

Facilitated by COM professor of 11 years Stacey Burleson, the class launched last year to positive student reviews.

"These books touch on things that are issues in society," explained Burleson. "In 'Snow Crash' (by Neal Stephenson) you have a virtual world. It was written in 1994, so the author sort of foresaw the future."

The class serves as an elective or English credit, and credit transfers to universities.

"It's created some really good conversations about the world around us," said Burleson. "We might not like something in society, but we can only change things if we're aware."

Continuing education art class unlocks opportunities

For Karen Brasier, any space - whether a rusted chain-link fence or a converted refrigerator - presents a potential canvas for art.

Exhibiting at venues such as the Galveston Art League and Box 13 in Houston, Brasier views each area and crafts her art to embrace it.

She created her "Fence Weavings" series by cutting strips of denim and other fabrics and entwining them through chain-link fences in circles and starbursts.

An architect, she began to explore her artistic options at COM and enrolled in continuing education art classes with professor Mark Greenwalt.

"I appreciated getting to work with a teacher," said Brasier. "The way the class is set up is a little more open. If you have an idea, it's a place to figure it out."
