At College of the Mainland we are proud to be your local institution of higher education.
We invite you to learn about our exciting career training in computer science, process technology, graphic arts, health care, child care and cosmetology (in our own full-service teaching salon). We offer pathways to academic degrees and certificates in more than 40 areas, from associate degrees, which transfer to universities, to workforce credentials that allow you to go directly into a career. We also provide a wide variety of continuing education courses in everything from personal fitness to computer science to real estate.

COM announces new president 
New COM president Dr. Beth Lewis 

College of the Mainland has named Dr. Beth Lewis as its seventh, and first female, president. Lewis' contract is for three years, effective Jan. 1, 2013.

 
"I am grateful to the board for their confidence in me with the unanimous vote, and I am looking forward to doing some exciting things working with the great people at College of the Mainland and in our service area," Lewis said. "My love is community colleges because you can change a life in 16 weeks."
 
Ralph Holm, board of trustees chairman, stated, "We are excited to bring on Dr. Lewis as our next president and first female president. We look forward to all she brings with her past experiences. I think we will find her tenure here to be very exciting and progressive."
 
Lewis comes with more than 25 years of experience in higher education instruction and administration. Prior to accepting the presidency at COM, Lewis was vice president of academic affairs at Northeast Lakeview College. Lewis also served as the dean of academic affairs at Blinn College in Brenham, Texas. Lewis earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Texas at Austin, a Master of Arts in English and a doctorate in educational leadership from Sam Houston State University. She is a certified mediator in workplace conflict.

Police intervention saves woman from jumping 

 

A former army combat medic, COM Police Academy graduate Kevin Lagatella is constantly, unconsciously alert. Sometimes it still saves lives. In August 2012 while the Tiki Island police officer was driving home, he noticed a vehicle sitting on the side of the overpass, apparently having trouble. He doubled back to take a look and saw a woman perched on the railing's edge. To read more, click here

A salute to success 

 

College of the Mainland for the fourth year in a row was named among the top 15 percent of colleges and trade schools that do the most to ensure the college success of America's military service members and spouses. To read more, click here.  

Dual credit class breaks record

Motivated to save time and money on higher education, 817 high school students are enrolled this year in COM's Dual Credit Program, the largest number in the program's 13-year history. Unconventional methods, outstanding results 

Exceeding the state average, 84 percent of the graduates of College of the Mainland's EMT-Basic passed the state exam and 80 percent of EMT-Intermediate graduates passed on the first try. Supporting tomorrow's nurses

As a continuation of its longstanding support for College of the Mainland nursing programs, Mainland Medical Auxiliary has donated $35,000 to fund scholarships for  students in the associate degree nursing, licensed vocational nurse and certified nurse assistant programs.
"The scholarship funds are a tremendous help to students. We have had nursing students graduate because they received money from Mainland Medical Auxiliary," said Gay Reeves, COM director of nursing.

Funds now available for technical training  

 

Those wanting to switch careers or enter the workforce now have even more options for an affordable education at COM. COM is now an eligible training site provider for Texas Workforce Solutions, and students enrolling in the Welding, Machinist and Mechanical Maintenance Programs may be eligible to receive funds from Texas Workforce Solutions to cover all or part of tuition costs. A new fast track to a career

Adult learners now have a new reason to be thankful with an opportunity to get on a fast track to workforce readiness with an innovative COM program. Individuals can now enroll in a course to gain workforce skills in either welding or medical coding and billing and simultaneously take a free class that teaches the math and reading skills needed to succeed in that occupation. Painting a culture

The earthy smells and vivid colors of Oaxaca, Mexico, inspired student Javier Ayala to create an artistic tribute to the city while on a COM study abroad trip. His mural is on display at the University of Oaxaca School of Language's auditorium. To read more, click here.

Student wins honors scholarship

COM student Kadi Maxwell has been awarded the Walter B. Cooper Memorial Scholarship sponsored by the Texas Regional Alumni Association of Phi Theta Kappa. In her first semester at a university, Maxwell earned a 0.0 GPA. After coming to COM and bringing it up, she now is not only part of Phi Theta Kappa, the national community college honor society, but she encourages others to excel. To read more, click here.
 
Caffeine fuels winning speech

College of the Mainland student Deneika Herron freely confessed her obsession at COM's first annual Roger Stallings Student Speech Competition. "My love and addiction to 'liquid crack' led me to research Starbucks," she began, referencing her love for coffee. To read more, click here.

Performance debuts student piece

Dissonant chords and eerie melodies filling the air, this year's Monster Musik performance featured a composition by recent COM graduate Jonathan Mireles. His piece, "Schimbarea Univers," which means "changing universe" in Romanian, is drawn from chords passed down through generations. To read more, click here.

Supporting those who serve

 

Carla Anderson, COM department chair of public service careers and allied health, has received the Department of Defense's Patriot Award for going above and beyond expectations to support one of her employees, Capt. Cheryl Bordwine. Bordwine is an Army Reserve member who was training at Ft. Hood at the time of the 2009 shooting. To read more, click here.

Teachers honored as "Seed Sowers"   

 

Two outstanding Dickinson High School graduates have honored COM professors Dr. Bernie Smiley and Dr. Tracy Orr as "Seed Sower" teachers, whom they said had made the greatest impact on their lives. Carlin and Chacko were both COM Collegiate High School students and graduated with an associate's degree from COM as well as a diploma from Dickinson High School.  

 

Competition honors teacher's legacy

 

The first annual Roger Stallings Student Speech Competition, named in honor of the professor who began COM's speech program, is another tribute to Stallings' work for students since 1978. 

Alumni Highlights
  • Officer Brandon Blair has been named Officer of the Year by the Friendswood Police Department. Blair is a graduate of the COM Police Academy.
  • Bruce Clawson, Texas City's emergency manager and homeland security director, was inducted into the Texas City High School Hall of Honors. Clawson graduated from COM with an Associate of Applied Science in criminal justice in May 1986 with highest honors.
