WATKINS LANDMARK CATCHES THE FIRST WAVE IN THE ECONOMIC RECOVERY SET

Greetings!

Since a good portion of the people in our company are surfers, I thought we would open the newsletter with a surfing metaphor.  While the economy is not growing by leaps and bounds, the bidding activity at Watkins Landmark Construction has never been at a higher level.  We are very fortunate that both new and existing clients are coming to us concerning their projects.  This has resulted in long days for our estimating department as well as anybody else who can lend a hand.  We hope that future newsletters will highlight some of the projects we have been bidding this month.

In this newsletter, we have an article on the latest tenant improvement projects at Scripps Park West written by our Project Engineer Jackie Sotelo.  We also have an employee profile on our latest hire Norm Testerman.  Our President Jody Watkins has also written an article about our office building and location.

Thanks to everybody who comments on our newsletters.  It has helped us shape the content and structure of future newsletters.  As always, we appreciate any comments you might have.
Watkins Landmark Starts the Final Tenant Improvement Project in   Phase 1 of Scripps Park West

Scripps Park West

By Jackie Sotelo

Watkins Landmark Construction has recently started work again in the Scripps Park West Phase 1 building. Scripps ParkWest Phase 1 was intially started by Watkins Landmark Construction in 2008.  It is the first of four buildings to be built on the site in Mira Mesa.  The Shell was completed and occupied in 2009 by the owner Coffman Specialties. Their suite was the first tenant improvement project to be completed by Watkins Landmark Construction.  Following the completion of the owner's suite and the shell, we were awarded subsequent tenant improvement projects in this building. Watkins Landmark Construction has now been awarded the tenant improvementSPW Lobby project for the remaining suites in the building.  Thanks to the award of this project, we've been able to add another member to our growing company (see Employee Profile article).  The project team is consisted of Chris Eagen as project executive, Norm Testerman who is the new addition to the team as a superintendant and Jackie Sotelo as the Project Engineer.  The project is managed by Steve Horine and Kathryn Conniff of Real Estate Consultants and was designed by Pete Bussett with Smith Consulting Architects.  Watkins Landmark Construction  is very proud of our work at Scripps Park West and we look forward to working with Coffman Specialties for many years to come.

Late last summer, during a time where every other company was reducing in size, we found ourselves in a position where we had outgrown our office on Carmel Valley Road.  In looking for a new office, we not only wanted to expand our office space but move into a building that made and impact on visiting clients, consultants and subcontractors.  Furthermore, we wanted a building that reflected the personality of our company.  After reviewing several office spaces around Del Mar and Solana Beach, we had not found a space that truly felt like our home.  By coincidence and a little luck, we found out that a space was opening in the Batter Kay building on San Dieguito Drive in Del Mar.  The building is rather hidden, tucked against a hill in Del Mar and the lagoon by the Racetrack.  It was designed by Batter Kay Architecture who also have offices in the building.

Since we have moved into this new building, we have received several positive comments from our clients, consultants and subcontractors.  The first impression of our space is that it is open and comfortable.  The second comments usually are about the views from our office.  As you can see from the picture above, we are on the flood plain just a few feet from the lagoon.

One of many company celebrations
Birthday Party for Kristian Burchat, Project Superintendent

Our employees have not only found it a very productive place to work, but also a very comfortable place to socialize.  As a small company, we like to celebrate our employees birthdays as well company successes.  After a significant project award, we will usually have a happy hour and congratulate our estimating department as well as discuss the challenges facing us on our new project.

So if you missed our 5th Anniversary Party last October, please feel free to stop by anytime.  We are on San Dieguito Drive just south of Jimmy Durante Blvd by Del Mar Racetrack.   We would love any opportunity to show off our office.
