2:8 Update
May 13, 2013
May 13, 2013

Dear Friends,

Another semester is "in the books," as OU Commencement and Graduation ceremonies were held this past weekend.

We encourage you read through the articles to see how God has been at work the past several weeks. In this 2:8 Update, you will see a list of students who graduated, and another list of friends who are spending part of their summer serving on mission trips to Kosovo, south Asia and Haiti.

We covet your prayer. We know that God is faithful. He has directed this ministry for more than 20 years. We want to be open to whatever He wants to teach us; however He wants to lead us.

Thank you for your continued, prayerful partnership with us.

LOVE IS.

Congratulations graduates
The 2:8 House would like to acknowledge our friends who recently completed degrees at OU.

We congratulate:
Ariel Askren, Master's in Communication;
Catie Combs, Bachelor's in English Literature;
Dr. Carolyn Jensen, Ph.D. in English Composition, Rhetoric and Literacy;
Dr. Cherith Tucker, Ph.D. in Math.

Please support these graduates in prayer as they continue their journey.
Mission trips begin to Kosovo, Haiti and South Asia

In the next few weeks, several friends of the 2:8 House will be traveling overseas on short-term mission trips. Each group will be traveling from mid-May through early June and would appreciate your prayer support.

As mentioned in previous 2:8 Updates, Craig, Anita and Jude Shepperd will be leading a group of students from Southern Nazarene University on a three-week trip to Kosovo. They will be working with a local congregation there, and Craig also will teach a class.

Bekah Law and Cherith Tucker (two recent OU graduates) will be traveling to two different countries in south Asia to work with a local ministry and also to reconnect with a few international students they met at OU last summer.

Tyler Neal and Kristen Olsen, OU students from Bethany First Church of the Nazarene, will be traveling to Haiti. Both Tyler and Kristen will be renewing friendships that began on their first trip to Haiti a year ago. Tyler is a junior on the OU Men's Basketball team, and several OU athletes will  be part of the group in Haiti.

Thank you for your prayer support.
Finals lunch outside
Fat Tuesday held during finals week
After an extended break, we hosted a free lunch on Tuesday of finals week for more than 50 members of the OU community.

"We served a free lunch for several years, and we thought it was time to bring it back during finals week," David Kyncl said. "We may schedule it on a monthly basis with the fall semester begins."

For years, the lunch provided a great time of fellowship, fun and food. The lunch was discontinued after it out grew the house.

"We discontinued the lunch because it just got too big," Kyncl said. "We started it as a way to meet students, but so many students were coming to lunch that we didn't have any time to talk with anyone. We may reinstate the lunch on a monthly basis in August as a way to connect with the campus community."

laying new sod in front yard
Front yard is growing again with new sod
A generous donation of 1,500 square-feet of bermuda sod from the Brown Sod Farms in Collinsville turned the 2:8 House front yard into a green lawn recently.

"The Brown family has supported our ministry before," Dave Kyncl said. "When I contacted them about the need for the sod, they said it was ours if we could find a way to get it back to Norman."

A few days later, Jerry Huddleston, a member of Norman Community Church of the Nazarene, volunteered to pickup the sod and bring it to Norman. Jerry also loaned a rototiller to the 2:8 House to prepare the section of the yard for the new sod.
The sod was installed just before Norman received two days of rain.

Thank you, Brown Sod Farms, Jerry Huddleston and other volunteers who unloaded and installed the sod.

The yard looks GREAT!

Mission Statement
Investing in relationships is eternal
By Dave Kyncl

"We loved you so much that we gave you not only God's good news but our own lives, too." 1 Thessalonians 2:8

Graduation is a bitter sweet time for the Kyncl family. We celebrate the milestones achieved by our friends, and we pray for them as they establish the next chapter in their lives in the "real world."

It is a good reminder that God's Word and relationships with others are ETERNAL investments. Even though graduations signal the end of chapter, we are confident that God will continue to demonstrate His love for each student as He provides guidance and direction.

A few weeks ago I received a Facebook message about a conversation that occurred on a Sunday morning at a church in Emporia, Kansas.

Somehow during the conversation, my name was mentioned. It turns out I had the opportunity to disciple both men while they were in college. David was a student at Independence Community College in the late 1980's, while Scott was a student at Pittsburg State University in the mid 1990's.

They both are actively involved in the same church in Emporia, but they didn't realize that they shared a common friendship with me.
Scott was excited to share the news with me, and I am excited to reconnect with David again.

Just last week, we received another note from Diego, a student who lived upstairs at the 2:8 House. Even though he returned to his home in Paraguay several years ago, he continues to lead a Bible study at his local church.

We will begin to share other alumni stories in future issues of the 2:8 Update. Next issue, we will include a story about Chris and Katie Ely, who are adopting a deaf child from the Phillipines.

Your partnership with the 2:8 House continues to make a difference for ETERNITY.

THANK YOU.
2:8 House Statement of Mission
The mission of the 2:8 House is to serve and build relationships with the University of Oklahoma community, its students, faculty, and staff, in the following manners:
  • Making the person and work of Jesus Christ known, including proclaiming, by word, and demonstrating, by deed, the reality and love of God;
  • Acting justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with our God;
  • Supporting the ministry of the local church; and
  • Making Christ-like disciples of those in the nations.
Deuteronomy 32:1-2 (The Message)
Listen, Heavens, I have something to tell you.
Attention, Earth, I've got a mouth full of words.
My teaching, let it fall like a gentle rain, my words arrive like morning dew,
like a sprinkling rain on new grass, like spring showers on the garden.
For it's God's Name I'm preaching--
respond to the greatness of our God!
