Looking Toward Sunday - June 26, 2016

Sermon: The Common Good
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12: 4-13

The Rev. Robert Alexander will preach at 9:00 a.m. in the sanctuary and 10:30 in Lingle Chapel.

The season of Pentecost is the perfect time to consider the gifts of the Holy Spirit.  Paul writes in detail about how the Spirit blesses the church and its members with gifts and provides the grace necessary for those gifts to be put to good use.  But our gifts can cause divisions within the church.  Sometimes we compare our abilities and consider some things to be more important than others.  We look upon some gifts as more significant and therefore consider those who have such gifts as being a more important part of the church.

Paul reminds us that all gifts are from God and that each member is equally important to the well being of the whole.  In fact, all of our gifts are to be used for the benefit of the whole.  Our gifts are not to be used for our own benefit but rather for the common good.  How would our community be blessed if this was our practice?

At the 10:30 service, the worship team will offer a call to action through the song "If We Are the Body."

Join us at 10:00-10:30 a.m. for Coffee at the Chapel on the northwest corner of Lingle Chapel near the cross for fellowship.

DCPC Nicaragua Partnership Team is Home!

Our Nicaragua Partnership Team is safely
home from Kilambe, Nicaragua.  This picture was taken outside of the home where they stayed  in La Naranja with members of the La Naranja community.  The church has helped to fund a preschool in this community and spent much time with the children and other community members.  Look for more information in the coming days and weeks as the team shares their experiences with the congregation.
Gleaning HAS BEEN POSTPONED!

The fields are not ready!  Due to the hot, dry weather, the corn crop has not come in enough for us to glean.  Look for an opportunity later in the summer.  Please contact Robert at [email protected] to let him know of your general interest.  If you would like to learn more about the work of Society of St. Andrew visit www.endhunger.org
Old Fashioned Hymn Sing and Ice Cream Social

On Wednesday, July 6 at 7:00 p.m. in Lingle Chapel, John Kuykendall and Jane Cain will team up to lead us all in sharing and singing our favorite hymns. Hymns old and new, simple choruses or four-verse poetic theology, what is meaningful to you and why? Be sure to bring children, youth, and anyone you know to share the joy of singing. Following the hymn sing there will be a time for further fellowship over homemade ice cream, a true summertime treat. If the weather is pretty, we'll gather at a tent right outside the Chapel.  If it is raining, we'll enjoy our time in the Parlor. PLEASE BRING a gallon of your own homemade ice cream to share with others. The Fellowship Ministry will provide some tasty toppings to accompany your ice cream masterpieces! Please RSVP to Stephanie Rollans.
Summer Fun!

If you're out of town this summer, take a picture in front of a church and send it to Rhonda Boggs ([email protected]) in the church office. We'll collect pictures on a bulletin board as a way of unifying us through summer travels. We are the body of Christ- wherever we roam and with whomever we worship.
Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School preparations are coming together! If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Jenny Alexander. VBS is scheduled for July 11-14 from 9 am to Noon.
BEST Partnership

It is hard to fathom that less than 10 miles from our very comfortable town is a community where children go to bed hungry, where children are caught in families where parents are unable to feed their children, where children are, in effect, raising themselves. This is Huntington Green, a community of rundown mobile homes, many without electricity, whose children attend Blythe Elementary School. During the school year, the children are fed at school, and during summer weeks, Angels and Sparrows provides lunch. But come the weekend, there is no food to be had.Last summer, this project was an overwhelming success! Over 100 members of our congregation contributed bags of food or money to buy food to feed these children on Summer weekends for 9 weeks.  That's 225 bags of food- thank you!   Some people filled a bag for one week, some for multiple weeks.  It's time to step up to the challenge again and meet this need in our community.  This need is tremendous, and the solution is simple!  Read the simple steps below to see how you can help DCPC meet this challenge.  We are blessed to have been given this opportunity to share in God's work in this community.
Follow these simple steps:
1.  Choose one or more of the following Fridays that you can provide a bag of food: July 1st, July 8th, July 15th, July 22nd, July 29th, August 5th, August 12th, August 19th, and August 26th.
2.  Email Catherine Bragg at [email protected]  or Rosemary Klein at [email protected] to sign up for  your specific dates.  A reminder will be sent the Monday of the week that you are providing a bag.
3.  Use the following list to fill your bag.  Remember to use a brown paper bag.
Helpful tips: Store brands are fine.   gallon of milk and cheese sticks will be
added before delivery. Small variations from this list are acceptable
4.  Pack all food in brown paper grocery bag
5.  Bring your full bag to the Student Center  by 9:30 a.m. on your particular Friday.
If you'd prefer for someone to shop for you, write a check to
DCPC and write "Blythe Food" in the memo line.
