Looking Toward Sunday - June 12, 2016

Sermon: Can I Get a Witness?
Scripture: Revelation 1

Lib McGregor Simmons will preach at 9:00 a.m. in the sanctuary and 10:30 in Lingle Chapel.

This Sunday, we dive into the deep waters that are the book of Revelation.  People say lots of things about Revelation.  Some of those things that people say are wrong:  It is NOT a prediction of specific future events.  It is NOT written in secret code to obscure the message from political authorities who might seek to persecute Christians.  Here is what is correct about Revelation:  While you will find violent images in the book of Revelation, these images work together to weave a vision of hope for those who walk in the way of Jesus the Christ.  While the message and vision is ultimately hopeful and uplifting, it is also intended to prick readers' complacency, so we need to be prepared to feel uncomfortable as its powerful word meets us where we live in our own day and time and shouts its central question at us:  Can I get a witness?

Elizabeth Davis will sing Great Day at the 9:00 a.m. service.

Join us at 10:00-10:30 a.m. for Coffee at the Chapel on the northwest corner of Lingle Chapel near the cross for fellowship.

Join the on-line Gathering Around the Word discussion CLICK HERE.  A new recorded introduction will be posted at the beginning of each week of the Revelation series.  The first of three monthly real time discussions will take place at on Tuesday, June 21, at 7 p.m. in the parlor.

Sunday Dinner with Friends

SUNDAY DINNER WITH FRIENDS  June 19th(FATHER'S DAY)  after the 10:30 a.m. Worship Service. Please join the Fellowship Ministry on for an opportunity for DCPC folks to share in a meal together after worship. After the 10:30 a.m. service, meet on the front steps of Lingle Chapel. Someone will be holding a "SundayDinner with Friends" sign. After a blessing, we will walk to Vail Commons Dining Hall on the campus of Davidson College. The atmosphere in the dining hall on Sundays is wonderful and will provide a great opportunity for our DCPC community to sit together and enjoy fellowship and great food....and maybe get to know this beautiful campus a little better.  All are invited....visitors too....and especially fathers and grandfathers. Please contact Kim Beard at [email protected] with any questions.
Summer Fun!

If you're out of town this summer, take a picture in front of a church and send it to Rhonda Boggs ([email protected]) in the church office. We'll collect pictures on a bulletin board as a way of unifying us through summer travels. We are the body of Christ- wherever we roam and with whomever we worship.
Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School preparations are coming together! If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Jenny Alexander. VBS is scheduled for July 11-14 from 9 am to Noon.
BEST Partnership

It is hard to fathom that less than 10 miles from our very comfortable town is a community where children go to bed hungry, where children are caught in families where parents are unable to feed their children, where children are, in effect, raising themselves. This is Huntington Green, a community of rundown mobile homes, many without electricity, whose children attend Blythe Elementary School. During the school year, the children are fed at school, and during summer weeks, Angels and Sparrows provides lunch. But come the weekend, there is no food to be had. It is rare that we are blessed to be able to address such a dire need in such a direct way, but we have been given this opportunity by Caterpillar Ministries, which works in this community and has given us the framework to keep these children fed during summer weekends. Last summer, this project was an overwhelming success! Over 100 members of our congregation contributed bags of food or money to buy food to feed these children on Summer weekends for 9 weeks.  That's 225 bags of food- thank you!   Some people filled a bag for one week, some for multiple weeks.  It's time to step up to the challenge again and meet this need in our community.  This need is tremendous, and the solution is simple!  Read the simple steps below to see how you can help DCPC meet this challenge.  We are blessed to have been given this opportunity to share in God's work in this community.
Follow these simple steps:
1.  Choose one or more of the following Fridays that you can provide a bag of food: June 24th, July 1st, July 8th, July 15th, July 22nd, July 29th, August 5th, August 12th, August 19th, and August 26th.
2.  Email Catherine Bragg at [email protected]  or Rosemary Klein at [email protected]to sign up for  your specific dates.  A reminder will be sent the Monday of the week that you are providing a bag.
3.  Use the following list to fill your bag.  Remember to use a brown paper bag.
Helpful tips: Store brands are fine.   gallon of milk and cheese sticks will be
added before delivery. Small variations from this list are acceptable
4.  Pack all food in brown paper grocery bag
5.  Bring your full bag to the Student Center  by 9:30 a.m. on your particular Friday.
If you'd prefer for someone to shop for you, write a check to
DCPC and write "Blythe Food" in the memo line.

1 loaf of bread, basic wheat or white
1 small jar of Peanut Butter
1 small jar of strawberry or grape jelly
1 box of Macaroni and Cheese (Ex. Velveeta Shells- does not need butter or milk added)
1 box of any cereal that would appeal to kids
1 4 pack of individual fruit containers (must have easy peel off top)
3 cans of ravioli (must be easy pop top)
1 8 pack of peanut butter or cheese crackers
Time for a Good Meal!

It's that time again! DCPC has been invited to prepare meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays in July for the Levine and Dickson Hospice House. We need volunteers to provide meals for 15 to 20 people (by either providing a main dish, vegetable or salad, bread and dessert). You don't have to do the entire meal yourself. Please sign up for at least one food item on our sign-up list.  Consider contributing paper goods for one or more evenings (napkins, plates and bowls). Please sign up by June 15 through www.signupgenius.com or contact Leah Chester-Davis at [email protected] or 704-617-3329. (When you go to SignUpGenius, click on Find a Signup. Search by using my e-mail ([email protected]) and you should be able to find the DCPC: Meals for Levine & Dickson Hospice House.
