Looking Toward Sunday - May 29, 2016

"Teach Us All Your Way of Healing"

Scripture: I Kings 8: 22-23,41-43
Luke 7: 1-10

Lib McGregor Simmons will preach at 8:30 and 9:45 in Lingle Chapel and 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary.

The Scripture lesson for Sunday begins, "After Jesus had finished all his sayings..."  Those sayings would be what we know as The Sermon on the Plain in which Jesus explains what it looks like to be a disciple.  The story that we read in Luke 7: 1-10 fleshes out the Sermon on the Plain by showing readers what discipleship really looks like.  It looks like all this and more:

Divided people overcoming barriers in order to attend to human need;
People carrying the faith and doubt and needs of others to the Lord;
Jesus being amazed, dazzled even, by the faith that he witnesses in such a community;
Healing.
Healing.
Healing.

Luke 7: 1-10 has much to say to DCPC about the present and future of our life together.  See you on Sunday as we pray, sing, and worship together...and amaze Jesus by the faith he sees in us!

The Geneva Choir will sing As the Wind Song at the 8:30 service.
The Chancel Choir will sing Come Down, Holy Spirit.

An Evening with Rev. Elmarie Parker

June 1st- An Evening with Rev. Elmarie Parker
Wednesday, June 1st (5:30 - 7:30 pm) we welcome Rev. Elmarie Parker to DCPC. Rev. Elmarie Parker serves as a Presbyterian Church (USA) Associate for Ecumenical Partnerships in the role of Regional Liaison to Church Partners in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon.  She will lead a discussion regarding current conditions in the region where they work and live, along with how these conditions (including ISIS) are impacting PCUSA Partners and their continuing work of worship and ministry.  Though there is much over which to be deeply concerned, there are also stories of hope to be heard and shared.  Bring your questions and come ready to hear the witness received first hand from local church leaders on the ground in these areas of conflict and chaos. We will gather in the Congregation House for dinner and would like a head count for the meal since Betsy will be preparing that.  CLICK HERE to register. For more about Elmarie and her husband Rev. Scott Parker, view findaworld.org.

Summer Staff Updates

This summer, as programs slow and many are on vacation, you'll see some slight changes in our staffing. By mutual agreement, Mary Margaret Porter, associate pastor for visitation, will be off for the summer, beginning June 5 and returning the end of August.  This time away helps Mary Margaret manage summer child care and gives her time to unpack at her new home.  Her summer leave also assists DCPC with budget issues. Mary Margaret assures us SAGES is in good hands this summer.  Visitation and pastoral care will continue to be supported by the other pastors during his time.  Mary Margaret will be around this summer if needed. As director of campus ministry, Claire George-Drumheller is away this summer while Davidson College students are out of school.  She'll be back in August to welcome the students back to DCPC.
Lingle Chapel: Always Open-All Are Welcome-
What You Will Find (Write A Prayer)

Prayer is a communication process that allows us to both speak and listen to God! People pray in many ways:  through singing, the spoken word, the unspoken word. Feel free to write a prayer and place it in the Prayer Box in confidence. If you desire, we will include this prayer anonymously in our Church's weekly prayer session, and other voices will join with yours.
Time for a Good Meal!

It's that time again! DCPC has been invited to prepare meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays in July for the Levine and Dickson Hospice House. We need volunteers to provide meals for 15 to 20 people (by either providing a main dish, vegetable or salad, bread and dessert). You don't have to do the entire meal yourself. Please sign up for at least one food item on our sign-up list. Of course, if you'd like to prepare an entire meal, that's up to you! If you have a group or team that likes to prepare a meal together, that's another option. It's easy! No kitchen or you don't like to cook? Consider contributing paper goods for one or more evenings (napkins, plates and bowls). Please sign up by June 15 through www.signupgenius.com or contact Leah Chester-Davis at [email protected] or 704-617-3329. (When you go to SignUpGenius, click on Find a Signup. Search by using my e-mail ([email protected]) and you should be able to find the DCPC: Meals for Levine & Dickson Hospice House.

May 29- Covenant or Jubilee are not meeting.
Covenant & Jubilee  (9:45 a.m. Congregation House)
June 5: The Covenant Class and the Jubilee Class have joined to welcome Dr.Jacqueline Bussie, the Director of the Forum on Faith and Life at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, and a Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude graduate of Davidson College, where she will be celebrating her Twenty-fifth Reunion on this weekend. She holds an MA in Religion from Yale and a Ph.D. in Theologry, Ethics and Culture from the University of Virginia.
         Dr. Bussie will be introducing us to her splendid new book, OUTLAW CHRISTIAN: FINDING AUTHENTIC FAITH BY BREAKING THE 'RULES', just published by Thomas Nelson, and the recipient of a starred review by Publishers Weekly. The reviewer says, "Bussie writes with poetry, pathos, and pepper as she cheerleads for breaking 'faith-laws.'" Another reviewer writes, "Reading Outlaw Christian was like having a late-night conversation with a dear friend. The experience is filled with deep confessions, refreshing honesty, and new grace."
Dr. Tony Abbott plans to teach Outlaw Christian in the Covenant Class in the fall, and this program can serve as an introduction to that series and also permit readers to buy the book from Main Street Books, which will be selling copies before and after Dr. Bussie's presentation. All adults are cordially invited.
