Kathy Yoshihara

Kathy Yoshihara is a third generation Japanese American from Southern California. She studied painting, sculpture, graphic arts at the University of California, Los Angeles. She is a mixed media artist combining
disciplines to create pieces that reflect her heritage.

By day, she is a graphic designer, but her current passion is experimenting and playing with clay. She likes to incorporate found and old items (sometimes recycled from unsuccessful pieces) and give them
a new life.

With this body of work she combines her background in graphic design and her fine art aesthetics to create pieces based on her family history and memories.  Her dioramas/vignettes of events (sometimes imagined) evoke a sense of nostalgia, fun and playfulness.  She hopes her work will bring a smile and sense of surprise to the viewer.

This show will be held at KOBO Gallery (at Higo)  in Japantown at

The Art of Gaman: Arts and Crafts from the Japanese American Internment Camps, 1942 - 1946

July 3 - October 12, 2014

Bellevue Arts Museum is currently exhibiting "The Art of Gaman " showcasing arts and crafts made by Japanese Americans in U.S. internment camps during World War II. The internees used found materials to make furniture and other objects to beautify their surroundings. Arts and crafts became essential for simple creature comforts and emotional survival. These objects-tools, teapots, furniture, toys and games, musical instruments, pendants and pins, purses and ornamental displays-are physical manifestations of the art of gaman, a Japanese word that means to bear the unbearable with dignity and patience.

The exhibition features more than 120 objects, most of which are on loan from former internees or their families. The exhibit includes several objects including works by Ruth Asawa, Jimmy Tsutomu Mirikitani, Isamu Noguchi, Henry Sugimoto, and master woodworkers Gentaro and Shinzaburo Nishiura.
