Kou Kitago arrived in the Northwest earlier this year.  She is a graduate student at Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music (Geidai) participating in an artist in residency program in the Art Department at Tacoma Community College.  This is a showcase of what she has been working on since her arrival here in the U.S.

"It has been eight months since I came to the US and I'm very happy to show my work for the first time here in the Northwest. I was inspired by many new experiences since my arrival which have influenced my new body of work. I have been studying fine arts with a focus on ceramic arts in Japan and interested in making not only functional  but also sculptural work.

For everyday life, I think it is important to create something that connects with
people. I'd like to create something that is enjoyable, whether you take it in your hands to use or look at just with your eyes. The piece can bring back some memory or stir your imagination.

I'm not good at making just "kawaii" or the cute things. I try to create scenes where the viewer senses something is unbalanced. In some pieces I'm hoping the viewer can imagine themselves in a place with unusual atmosphere. People often ask me "What is this animal? Is this the head?", or "What is it doing?" But this is my way of expression. I often reply that they can decide for themselves what a subject of one of my pieces is doing.

I'm happy if my work creates a reaction or something comes to mind during those fraction of seconds when they first encounter my work."

Mieko Mintz Textiles and Designs
New arrivals
Born in southern Japan, Mieko Mintz uses hand sewn and dyed textiles from around the world to make contemporary pieces. Mintz's work follows in the kantha tradition. First her designs are made into kantha throws in West Bengal, which she then cuts to fit her jacket designs.   Her signature pieces are each one of a kind garments made from vintage sari kantha, which are layers of discarded saris joined by a simple running stitch.
Her studio is in New York City.   Click here to see one Mieko Mintz jacket worn 3 ways.
