After the flood
County-wide commitment to children and families remains
The historic floods that took lives, displaced thousands, and caused billions of dollars in damages are causing Boulder County communities to dig deep and rethink their priorities. As we rebuild, we can be thankful for one common value whose focus is gaining momentum: We believe in ensuring that our youngest residents have what they need to succeed, in school and in life. Community Solutions Action Plan Update
Latino parent forums coming soon
A county-wide, cross-sector coalition of leaders has met periodically this year, and a task force worked diligently over the summer, to help develop a Community Solutions Action Plan for early learning. Several grassroots early learning forums for Latino families will take place across Boulder County this fall, helping to further inform our Action Plan. Once complete, the plan will help guide parents and leaders from our school, business, faith, civic and nonprofit sectors towards closing the achievement gap through early learning. A new Children's Reading Foundation for Boulder County will convene this winter to help implement the plan. Please contact chris@commfound.org for more information or to get involved.

Your support needed
Family Learning Center and Wild Plum Center hit hard by sequester, flood
The Family Learning Center in Boulder was severely impacted by the recent flood and is working hard to recover and restore its middle and high school program space, as well as a basement area that had served as storage for now-ruined preschool-age toys.
The costs to fix drywall, replace wiring, furnaces and hot water heaters, let alone furniture, computers, books, and other materials are quickly mounting.
To help, please make a donation at www.flcboulder.org or mail a check to: 3164 34th Street, Boulder, Colorado 80301.
Long before the flood, Wild Plum Center for Young Children and Families learned this summer that it would take a 5.27% hit due to the federal sequester. The amounted to a loss of $111,600 in this year's budget. A classroom was closed, multiple staff were laid off, and 15 children in poverty were cut from the program.
The good news is that Wild Plum recently was recently offered
15 Colorado Preschool Program slots from the St. Vrain Valley school district. The new challenge is coming up with a match of $55,000 by December 31, 2013 in order to make this happen.
Wild Plum has served Longmont's low-income families since 1965. As the main Early Head Start and Head Start programs for Longmont, WPC serves just under three hundred families who live at or below the Federal Poverty income level. WPC focuses on creating a worthwhile, engaging early learning environment for children birth-five, while also providing education in the areas of health, nutrition, parenting classes, counseling and overall support for self-sufficiency.
Wild Plum's staff would love to show you around their facilities and give you an opportunity to meet some wonderful children. Site visits are planned for Wednesday, October 30 and Tuesday, November 12 at 9:30 am.
Please RSVP to loris@wildplumcenter.org. Or visit www.wildplumcenter.org and click "Donate Now."
