Rhode Island KIDS COUNT co-sponsored the Woonsocket Data in Your Backyard presentation with Connecting for Children & Families on September 25th and we co-sponsored the Newport Data in Your Backyard presentation with the Newport Partnership for Families on October 1st.
The Rhode Island KIDS COUNT Data in Your Backyard series presents community-level child well-being data from the Rhode Island Kids Count Factbook in communities across the state. These presentations are followed by a community discussion.

Launch of TeethFirst! - Early Dental Visit Initiative

Rhode Island KIDS COUNT recently participated in the launch of TeethFirst!, a bilingual early dental visit initiative. The focus of TeethFirst! is to promote early dental visits and increase oral health literacy among families, health care providers, and community organizations. It is a project of the RI Oral Health Commission, with Rhode Island KIDS COUNT serving as the lead agency and project manager.
Free resources for parents and families, dental providers, health care providers, and community organizations regarding early dental visits are available in both English and Spanish. New Data on Child Poverty in Rhode Island

New data on the extent of child poverty in Rhode Island, based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS), was released on September 19th.
Data highlights include:
- Almost one in five (19.5%) of Rhode Island's children lived in poverty in 2012.
- Rhode Island's child poverty rate had been steadily increasing since 2008, but now seems to be stabilizing.
- Rhode Island ranks 5th in New England and 22nd nationally for child poverty (where 1st is best and 50th is worst)
