Tips On How To Promote Online
Volume III - Issue 3

When you decide to use Facebook as one of your forms of book promotion, the first thing you should do is learn the rules of promoting on FB.  For instance what should you not do in promotion?

I'm going to offer a few tips just in case you haven't done your research.

1.  Don't Send A Buy My Book Post As Soon As Someone Accepts Your Friendship

This is one of the quickest ways to be unfriended.  If you want to send a post, say hello and you look forward to chatting with them.  Or offer a freebie, that's a lot better than asking someone you don't know to spend money on you.

 2.  Don't use FB messages for promotion

FB is about building relationships.  If you haven't chatted with someone on their page or profile, think before contacting them using FB messaging.  No one  wants to receive a buy my book message from someone they don't know. That's considered as SPAM.  Don't be a spammer writer.

3.  Don't promote on someone's page

Again another way to get unfriended, make sure you have permission to promote on someone's page especially if you've never talked to them before.

4.  Don't promote in a comment

Are you commenting only so you can include a link about your book?  This is a big no-no.  There will be plenty of times to promote your book, in the comments of conversation isn't one of them.  Wait for someone to ask you to leave your link.

5.  Don't tag someone to promote your book

This is a big no-no especially if you have friends who promote for a living.  Don't try to get free promotion on their pages.  That's not fair to them or to those who pay for this service.  If they want to promote you for free they will.

If you want them to know about your new book, send an email, or let it come up in their newsfeed.  Don't tag them.

6.  Don't tag someone for a local event if they are not in your city

I'm in St. Louis and I get tagged for events in other cities all the time.  I have over 2000 friends, can you imagine my notifications and feed when writers do this.

Again free promotion for your event, not cool.  Let it come up in my feed or create an event page.  If I want to travel for the event, I will.

.  Don't join groups just to promote your books

Don't be a drive by promoter.  We only see you in the group when you have  a new book to promote.  Participate in the group and the members will be happy to see your promotion for your new book and hopefully buy a few copies.

.  Don't put people in groups

If you want to start a group, FB makes you add someone to the group.  Pick a friend and let them know you're using them to start the group.  Then send out invites to other people you would like to join.  Give them the choice.  They shouldn't have to unsubscribe from a group they didn't join.

9.  Don't rant about nobody is buying your book

Complaining about no sales is not going to make a new reader want to buy your book .  Makes me wonder why aren't people buying.  Don't put that thought in readers heads.  Stay positive.  Post excerpts, host contests, anything that will keep readers interested, not turn them off.

10.  Don't talk about your readers

Did you have a bad review or a bad experience with a reader? Don't share it on social media.  Keep those comments to yourself.  What reader wants to buy from someone who can't handle an honest review or has a bad experience with a reader?  Stay positive.

Remember you're trying to lure readers to you not turned them away.

These are a few no-nos I've dealt with. I'm sure you've had a few yourself.  Stop by my blog and tell me about them:- http://lashaundahoffman.com/2015/04/05/face-book-no-nos/

Next issue we will discuss content on social media.
