Trip to Cancun Mexico

We just got back from Cancun, Mexico. I was down there with my family. One of my goals while there, was to find suppliers for some of the woods that we use. The Yucatan Peninsula is an amazing jungle of gorgeous trees. This is a place I had never seen until now and I couldn't help but notice all the beautiful Trees. Woods like Chechen, Ziricote, Katalox, and Rosewoods were all around me! I just did not know which trees were which... It was so hard to keep my eyes on the road rather than the amazing trees.

Julia started  Googling what Chechen tree's  and many others looked like. What a blast!

These woods I have mentioned are some of the best sounding flutes woods available. Chechen is such a gorgeous sounding and looking wood that years ago it was chosen for the Jan Michael Looking Wolf Flute set. This Flute Set was so lovely that I am a little jealous of those who own one of the 25 that we made.

While driving to the Tulum Ruins, my kids spotted several wood mills. In one shop we stopped at, I was blown away by the amazing Chechen board I saw leaning against the walls. I was so entranced with the wood in front of me that I did not see the electrical wiring that they used to power the joiner. They had three or four electrical cords in a spaghetti knot. This I became aware of when a small electrical explosion happened. The workers kicked around the wires a bit then tried again. This time there was a large explosion that surprised us all. One of the workers walked over to the knot of wires and picked up one end... It was a melted mess and was completely separated from the other wires. In this shop I had a very difficult time communicating, but they have some incredible wood and I am certain we will be talking more...
In a shop across the road we had a fun experience. My son Tanner joined me at first as my translator. Tanner has taken a course in Spanish at the local High School. We attempted talking with a couple of people until another client joined us and he spoke a bit of English.  This shop has some Ziricote and Chakte Viga that blew my mind!
After taking up an afternoon of time searching for wood, we finally moved on.

It is my hope that we will be able to export some of these gorgeous woods from the Yucatan Area. Fortunately, I have a log of Chechen in my shop already! Also a gorgeous piece of Pua Rosa.

In celebration of the awesome expereince we had in Mexico, we are promoting Yucatan woods.
