AS I SEE IT: There's a Place at the ED Table for Higher Education

If you've ever worked on a life sciences project, you've gotten a glimpse of what they
can do. If you've worked with companies that are leveraging university IP or housed
in a research park or incubator, you've gotten a glimpse of what they can do. If you
need to reach your home-grown graduates, you've gotten a glimpse of what
they can do. The "they" I am talking about is colleges and universities.
I'm now going to attempt to make an analogy between higher education's role in
economic development and the classic book, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.
One of my biggest take-aways from that book (read decades ago!) was that sometimes you find yourself with a very fragmented perspective of something until you step back, turn things upside down, and integrate that something into your world view. And I think it's time for economic developers to integrate higher education into their world view. (read more)
