NEWS & NOTES
It's doggone good information to know.

Make a Resolution to help pets in your community this year!

Every year, MCHA is dedicated to the animals in our community, working to make sure there are safe places for them to live, options for families struggling to keep their pets, and working towards a more humane future for our communities.

How you can help:
1. Volunteer
MCHA is looking to add to our VIPaws teams this year. VIPaws is one of our most popular programs in the community.  If you think you and your pet are interested in visiting libraries, schools, dormitories, nursing homes or care facilities, you can find out more by visiting here or emailing Sarah DeLone.

2. Donate
You can donate today with a one-time gift, or a recurring gift, by visiting here. It does not require an account to be made and is safe, simple and a secure opportunity to make your donation possible.

3. Advocate

Report abuse or the mistreatment of animals. You can call the City of Bloomington Animal Care and Control at 812-349-3492.  Educate yourself and those you know on important animal welfare issues in the community and be an active participant in community discussions.

Winter Weather Advisories

No matter the temperature or the pet, wind chills and cold weather can threaten a pet's life. They are at risk for frostbite and hypothermia in extreme cold. Exposed skin on noses, ears, and paw pads can quickly freeze and suffer permanent damage.

Make sure your pets and pets in the community stay safe by following these tips:

1. Avoid Chemicals

Salt and other chemicals used to melt snow and ice irritate the pads of your pet's feet. When they lick the iritation they ingest the chemiclas, which can be dangerous. Keep your pets away from the chemicals when you can; use boots; and wipe them down when they come inside.  Call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center  at (888) 426-4435 if you suspect your animal has ingested a poisonous substance.

2. If Pets are Outdoors

If your animal must spend extended periods of time outside:

  • Provide a dry, draft-free shelter

    • Big enough to move around but small enough to maintain body heat

    • Raised a few inches off the ground

    • With shavings, straw or other bedding on the floor to retain heat

  • Provide extra food, especially protein, to help with body heat and energy

  • Make sure your pet's water is fresh and unfrozen

  • Use plastic bowls instead of metal - pet tongues can freeze to metal

  • Use a heated bowl if possible

3. Know the facts

If you see an animal left outside that may be in danger, know who to call if the animal is at risk, or could be suffering. The City of Bloomington Animal Care and Control oversees the enforcement of animal ordinances and can dispatch officers to city or county addresses to check on the well-being of animals. You can reach them at 812-349-3492 and read local animal ordinances here.
