Why MCHA on #GivingTuesday?

Each year, MCHA continues to be dedicated to the animals in our community. Working to make sure there are safe places for them to live, options for families struggling to keep their pets, and working towards a more humane future for our communities.

You can donate today with a one-time gift, or a recurring gift, by visiting here. It does not require an account to be made and is safe, simple and a secure opportunity to make your donation possible on Giving Tuesday.

The human-animal bond is a mutually beneficial and dynamic relationship between people and animals. The VIPaws program utilizes carefully screened volunteers and animals to provide safe, friendly interactions with people all over our community. Lori and Henry are incredibly active in the community as one of our VIPaws teams. "Hi, I'm Lori and this is my little dog, Henry. Would you like a visit with Henry?" This is how I introduce us when we are visiting at Hospice House. I tell people we are here for patients as well as families, and nurses too. Often during our visits we see tears and hear "My mom hasn't reacted to anything or smiled in so long", or "my dad hasn't spoke in so long" after he mumbled a few words to Henry. I love to watch the magic that our therapy dogs do!

When Fairview Elementary school received a failing grade from the Indiana Department of Education for the second year in a row, several new and innovative programs were put into place, just like the ARF program, to help increase the reading and math proficiency levels in students. MCHA's ARF (Animal Reading Friends) program has proven to get students more interested in reading. Once a week during their reading time, students get time with Ambassadog Dog 'Scout.' The students are excited and happy to read to an attentive listener, and the required reading time has become a special time to look forward to each week. Parents have mentioned that Scout is "quite the celebrity" in their home and is the topic of many conversations.

Part of our mission is working to keep pets in the home, one of our programs does this by providing funding for an emergency vet visit. This year, we've been able to fund more than just the visit, and more of the costs! Rose has lived his entire 13 years with his mom, and when she lost her job, they had to move. Rose escaped and didn't get home until a week later, and with a pretty big wound from being attacked. MCHA worked with Arlington Heights Veterinary Hospital
to make sure Rose was patched up! Rose is better than ever and happy at home thanks to donors and great relationships with our vet partners!

This is a crate. It's nothing special, but it can be the difference that keeps a pet in a home sometimes. Part of what MCHA does is providing Emergency Assistance to pets in need. Recently, a client received an emergency assistance voucher, but had no way to get her dog to the vet. She usually takes the bus as she can't drive. While she would pay for a taxi, they refused to transport the dog unless it was in a crate. When staff heard all she needed was a crate, MCHA got her a crate.
