IN MEMORY OF
WIND DANCER,
LOLA & LOLITA
|
We love to celebrate the special joy that Animal Ambassadors bring to our humane education programs. Unfortunately, with that joy also comes sadness. In the past month, we have had to say goodbye to Wind Dancer the ferret, and sister rats Luna and Lolita. They will be missed.
 | Wind Dancer at Paws and Claws Camp 2013 |
Wind Dancer joined the MCHA staff on May 21, 2008. Always a favorite of both children and adults, her gentle, yet spunky presence was a mainstay of MCHA humane education programs and Paws and Claws summer camps. During her time with the MCHA, Wind Dancer participated in 519 programs reaching nearly 17,000 people. | Luna (front) and Lolita at Paws and Claws camp 2013
|
Luna and Lolita joined the MCHA team in July of 2013, and sadly both recently developed large tumors that negatively affected their quality of life. They were extremely friendly, and great ambassadors for their much maligned wild cousins. In their short time at the MCHA, they participated in 20 programs reaching more than 600 people.

Letter from the Chair I don't usually add a message to eNews, but this month there is so much to celebrate and thank that - well - maybe it's time to start. First, we are all so excited about Rebecca Warren's arrival. Her energy, animal welfare philosophy and ideas are spot on for the future of MCHA. Two days into her tenure she has already hit the ground running. Please take a moment to welcome her personally by whatever means you like - email, Facebook, twitter, etc. With Rebecca's arrival, I need to express my most sincere thanks to staff and board for all their work in the interim period. Those include Sarah DeLone, Victoria Wisley, Kimberly Goy, Kelli Shute, Brad Collins, Sarah Perfetti, Frona Powell, Angie Raymond, and those that rotated out during the fall and winter. Not only did we keep MCHA working in a way that maintained all of our programs, we were able to explore new program ideas, build new relationships, pull off two successful events, and come out the other side stronger than before. I couldn't be more proud to be part of this group of people. I also want to thank everyone involved with this year's Tails on the Town event. We exceeded many of our goals for the evening and improved our outcomes from the past couple of years. And did all of this in a new venue with some new vendors. It is particularly important that I thank the event chair, Kimberly Goy, and the point staff person, Victoria Wisley. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Tails on the Town could not have happened without the dedication and hard work of either of these two MCHA-ers. Lastly, board and staff will be retreating in early June to set our goals for the future. We have a lot of ideas in the works and are looking forward to putting them into action. I guarantee the next chapter of MCHA will be an exciting one and look forward to having all of you along for the ride. Best to all, and thank you for your continued support. Sara A. Peterson - MCHA Board Chair

Meet our new Executive Director:
Rebecca Warren
|

MCHA is delighted to announce our new executive director, Rebecca Warren.
She comes to Bloomington from the Humane Society of Indianapolis (IndyHumane) where she served as community outreach and education program manager. During her tenure, Rebecca oversaw a multi-faceted outreach program working closely with Animal Care and Control. Rebecca created, im plemented and evaluated the humane education curriculum and programming in schools. She cultivated relationships with a variety of groups across Indianapolis, not limited to animal welfare groups. She even researched effective tools and opportunities for what has now become the Animal Welfare Center low-cost, high-volume spay/neuter clinic prior to joining IndyHumane's staff. By advocating for collaboration and idea sharing, IndyHumane's outreach and education program under Rebecca's leadership has proven to be a successful model at the forefront of animal welfare in Indianapolis. In addition to her work at IndyHumane, Rebecca served six years on the board of Spay-Neuter Services of Indiana and has been a leader of the Indianapolis Animal Welfare Alliance. Tails on the Town was a great success!

Tails on the Town: Rio Carnival
Saturday, April 26th, 2014
IU Alumni Hall 6:30 PM
People got great deals on wonderful prizes while having fun and raising more than $35,000 at our annual Tails on the Town event. Our largest event of the year, Tails on the Town helps support all of our major programs allowing us to continue to protect, advocate and educate for our animal friends.
Of special note was the more than $8000 that was raised specifically for our medical assistance program, which helps fund emergency vet care for family pets who would otherwise not receive treatment. We want to help people keep their pets in their homes where they belong!

Help name our new
Animal Ambassador Guinea pigs!
|
We recently added two new Animal Ambassadors to the humane education program. Now we need YOUR kids (age 14 and under) to help to name them. Several weeks ago, 10 guinea pigs were brought into the animal shelter: a papa pig, 2 mamas, and 7 babies! The babies were too young to be taken away from their Mom, so they were fostered for a week by Education Program Director Sarah DeLone. During that time they were assessed for their potential as education animals. These two boys stood out as being the most calm, curious, and non- nibbly of the babies, so they have joined our team! We will be accepting name suggestions until May 15th, and the winners will receive a framed 8 x 10" photo of the Guinea pig they raised, along with a chance to come in for a private visit! Please send your suggestions to: sdelone@monroehumane.org with the name and age of the child who is submitting the name. The winning names will be announced on May 16th!
