2013 HIGHLIGHTS
As we look forward to the new year and new adventures, the MCHA would like to share a few of the highlights of 2013 through the lens of our mission statement:

The mission of the Monroe County Humane Association is to compassionately and responsibly,
protect, advocate and educate for animal welfare.

Protect

The MCHA protects animals in numerous ways. The first is through our assistance programs. With an ultimate goal of keeping companion animals in their homes and out of shelters, our assistance programs provide support for hundreds of local pets and their people each year.
  • SNAP (Spay Neuter Assistance Program)
    • Provided more than 650 vouchers to reduce or eliminate the cost of spay/neuter surgeries for animal companions
  • Litter Relinquishment Program
    • Covered the full cost of spay/neuter surgery for 10 cats and 2 dogs whose offspring were brought to the animal shelter
  •  Medical Assistance Program
    • Provided 87 vouchers to cover the cost of a vet visit for animals in crisis

In addition, the MCHA works with state and national organizations to combat the problems of animal fighting, cruelty and hoarding. In June, MCHA assisted the Indiana Gaming Commission and the ASPCA in a raid on an alleged cockfighting operation, rescuing over 70 birds, 5 pigs, 6 dogs, gerbils and a snake.

The MCHA also raised over $7300 to directly benefit the animals at the Bloomington Animal Shelter through both private donations and our popular elementary school fund drive "Pennies for Pets".

Advocate

Advocacy runs through the core of everything we do. Our programs concentrate on improving the welfare of animals, both by celebrating the human/animal bond and by helping people become more aware of the problems and challenges they face.

On the local level, MCHA staff sits on commissions that monitor animal welfare in our community, suggest legislative and policy changes and moderate disputes.

At the state and national level we monitor upcoming issues and encourge people to get involved.

As part of the Monroe County COAD (Community Organizations Active in Disaster), we represent animals in its mission to enhance the community's ability to mitigate, prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from large-scale disasters.

As a partner in the Middleway PAWSS Program, we advocate for the animals involved in domestic violence situations by sponsoring spay/neuter surgeries and providing medical assistance for animals in their foster program.

Through our therapy animal program, VIPaws, we promote the physical, emotional and cognitive benefits that animals can provide in our daily lives by incorporating trained and screened Pet Partners teams into activities that benefit from human/animal interactions.

Thanks to 20 dedicated Pet Partners teams, VIPaws had is busiest year ever providing 525 hours of visiting time during 432 visits to 27 different facilities including retirement homes, schools, libraries, IU dorms, camps and more.

Educate

A cornerstone of the MCHA, our education program promotes positive attitudes toward animal welfare and focuses on promoting the human/animal bond though interactions with our many "Animal Ambassadors".  In 2013, our education department:
  • Reached more than 14,000 people through free and low-cost programs and displays
  •  Provided 175 programs to schools, pre-schools,community  organizations, IU classes and camps
  • Attended 27 community, school and IU events to promote the MCHA mission and goals
  • Offered 5 sessions of Paws and Claws Camp for kids aged 7-12
  •  Coordinated the monthly Animal Advocates Club for 6th- 8th grade students

All of our activities are funded entirely by public donations along with a few grants, and we accomplish our work with a staff of less than 3 people and dozens of wonderful volunteers.

Here is to an even busier and more productive 2014!

Your donations at work: KIND News
We LOVE getting mail from elementary school students who love animals! Recently, we received a package full of thank you notes from Ms. Powers class at Childs Elementary School. The MCHA has been sponsoring classrooms to receive Kind News since 2002, and this year, more than 50 classrooms have been receiving KIND News

Kind News
reveals the beauty and wonder of the animals who share our world while also exploring the challenges they face. Through profiles of amazing kids, features about rescued animals, pet care tips, and how-tos on helping backyard wildlife, Kind News encourages youth to coexist humanely with animals, celebrate the human-animal bond, and become active in efforts to protect animals.

We wanted to give a huge thank you to our donors, who make this program possible
