Parenting While Grieving Series Begins April 6

The best predictor of success for a child who is dealing with the death of a sibling or parent is being cared for by someone who is doing well. It's vital that we provide adult caregivers the tools and the support they need, because we know that parenting and grieving at the same time can be a very challenging situation.

We offer an educational series called Parenting While Grieving to caregivers who are parenting children and teens who have had a parent or sibling die. In this eight-week, evidence-based series, bereaved parents and/or caregivers explore the impact of loss on children, their developmental reactions to the grief process, and strategies for dealing with the challenges of parenting while navigating their own grief.

Our upcoming spring series will begin on April 6 and will meet weekly on Wednesday evenings, from 7 to 8:30 pm, until June 1. There will be no meeting on Wednesday, April 20.

Meet Our Marathon Team: Part 1
Kerri Conneely, John Fleming, and Deana Hickey

We are so proud of our team of Boston Marathon runners, who are supporting us by running 26.2 miles in order to promote awareness for TCR and raise critical funds to help grieving children, teens, and families.

Each of our runners has a unique story full of personal connections to TCR and strong motivations for running. In order to honor their efforts, we're going to be introducing our team, 3 at a time, in this month's newsletter and in our March newsletter.

This month, we proudly introduce Kerri Conneely, John Fleming, and Deana Hickey!

TCR Staff to Present NAGC Webinar

On Tuesday, March 15, TCR's Colleen Shannon and Nancy Frumer Styron will present a webinar entitled
"Providing Culturally Responsive Grief Support to Children and Adolescents in Underserved Settings," hosted by the NAGC National Alliance for Grieving Children.

Rachel Rodrigues, our partner from the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, will join them to lend her voice to this important topic.

We hope you will take advantage of this unique educational opportunity.

Young TCR Alums: Building Community and Connection

On January 29, a group of young alumni came together to share stories and connect with others around a shared experience at TCR. They enjoyed time socializing together in the warmth of our big yellow house in Arlington, while they connected over activities, games, and of course, snacks and dessert!

Our young alumni were also eager to discuss ways that they could potentially give back to TCR, including hosting tours of our center, providing mentorship through our Teen Program, and speaking on behalf of TCR at various engagements.

We're inspired by our young alumni, and we're thankful they could gather for such a great night of connection and community building!

Thank you, DeVito Funeral Home of Arlington, for nominating us for a $2,500 grant from The Matthews Foundation, the charitable arm of the casket company, Matthews International. We were honored to receive the grant earlier this month!

It was such a pleasure to welcome Jonathan and Fred DeVito, along with James Muirhead, of The Matthews Foundation, to our center. This grant will help us provide much needed support for grieving children, teens, and families. Many thanks!

Our Heartfelt Thanks

Thank you for your support, and thanks to the following people for some special, recent donations.

Thank you so much to our  Belmont Hill School volunteers who came to our center in late January! As part of their annual community service day, they helped refresh our second floor space by cleaning toys and surfaces and organizing the supplies. They also received a full tour, and at the end of the day they contributed to a community memory art piece. We're thrilled they could come by, and we are so thankful for all of their help!

We are also grateful that we were able to welcome the Arlington Hockey Club Peewee A team to our center for a tour. Each of the past four years, the AHC has hosted a Skate-a-Thon as a fundraiser on our behalf. This past fall, they exceeded their goal and raised over $15,000 for TCR! It is so wonderful to share in such a positive community interaction with the AHC, and we absolutely loved having them at our center.

The Children's Room has partnered with Donate for Charity to make it fast and easy to donate your old vehicle to TCR. Your vehicle will be picked up - free of charge! - from anywhere and TCR will receive a donation in the amount of the vehicle's value.
